bob the plumber

I start my gas exams tomorrow being a CAT 2 entrant with 3-4 years experience in plumbing and gas/lpg/oil under a qualified guy. Any of you gents got any tips or knowledge of what to expect or what i really need to be up to scratch with apart from the obvious answer of everything. Feel free to throw a few questions my way aswell, lets call it a mock exam written by the guys doing it day in day out.

cheers

bob

read the questions twice, I found some questions a bit ambiguous.

Good luck for tomorrow.

When talking to otherGSR engineers they (for the most part) always say that they struggledwith the ventilation questions:

So here's a practiceone for you:

A bedsitting roommeasures 2.75m x 3.25m x 2.4m, has a cooker plus an instantaneousflueless sink water heater rated at 5Kw(net), plus to be installednext week a flueless space heater rated at 5Kw(net).

What are theventilation requirements?

Oh, and again good luckfor tomorrow (not that you need it........ right :book🙂.

Define the 'cooker'.

Cooker:- domestic oven, hot plate, grill or any combination thereof.

If your asking me the Kw rating of the appliance. Then for the purposes of this question it's not needed.

my advice would be to read the question, (not intended to be rude or state the obvious, but the amount of candidates who waste valuable time, mis reading, or completely changing what they think the question says is unbelievable) relax, concentrate on safety as that is all ACS is about, try to apply common sense and logic to the ones you dont know and you wont be far away, surely the centre you are in have you tuned in to what the exam will be about by now, the last couple of days training is about fine tuning bits and pieces to get you into exam mode

The answers are multi-choice. When i took mine there were generally two answers that were plainly B/S but the other two were so close that it was pretty hard to make the call.
Having said that, everything you need will be provided, it's just finding it. They'll give you a pile of normative documents and the answer is in there somewhere but they are indexed which makes things somewhat easier. I must admit i wasn't looking forward to doing mine and i make no bones about it, i came away from there mentally drained but dont let that put you off, as i said all the answers ARE there. Good luck mate.

baer in mind im doing exams tomorrow and going by my answer you guys might think im in trouble but here goes!

2.75 x 3.25 x 2.4 = 21.45m3 appliances permissable in space
based on there being openable window or door to outside
cooker room larger than 10m3 no ventilation required if door or window to outside
sink heater room larger than 20m3 no ventilation required window required
space heater requires 100cm2 min + 55cm2 for over 2.7kw output

so venilation required for the above would be 265cm2 for the above

am i miles out or kind of there lol

Your right about the cooker and the Flueless sink water heater, But......

For the Flueless space heater in a room???

I see how you've come to your answer, but you've skipped a step. I would look at that table again and pay perticular attention to the heading "Maximum appliance rated input limit (net)"

so??

21.54m3 room x 45w per m3 of room volume = 969.30 w
max inupt permissable for this appliance is 969.30 watts so 0.97 kw
meaning the space heater is to large to be allowed to be instaled
all other aplliances are ok
hope thats right, bad mistake!

Don't worry as far asI’m aware the tests are multiple choice so they won't be that hard

good luck and let usknow how it goes tomorrow.

Ok..... You asked for it!!!!!! (no, only joking :smile5🙂

What are the ventilation requirments for a single burner hotplate with a R/S boiler in a room measuring 1.5m X 2.5m X 2.4m where there is no excisting ventilation?

room sealed boiler no required ventilation unless stated in MI's
burner hotplate requires 50cm2 plus openable window if room is 5 to 10m3 which it is at 9m3

so 50cm3 vent required 🙂

thanks, feel free to throw any more questions my way, its good practice 🙂

i have 9 tutorials that i give to candidaqtes before their exam (not the night before TBH) but you are welcome to them, PM me with an email address,
remember to read the question properly, so with that in mind "DO YOU KNOW THE REG WHICH DICTATES THE USE OF TEMP CONTINUITY BOND?"

PS as a wee clue, if you need to look up the answer for this one it is gonna be a long day for you

NO, NO, NO, NO ,NO,
READ THE QUESTION
THE ANSWER CAN ONLY BE EITHER YES OR NO, I DIDNT ASK YOU FOR THE REG I ASKED IF YOU KNEW THE REG.
1-0 to me, do you want another haha

yeah go on 🙂 i think you should only get half a point for that though

no 🙁 where did i go wrong ive just looked at it again but cant see it

Tha answer is on the same table (Flueless appliance ventilation) as the previous question.

Just out of interest, could you quote me everything it says in that box( from the table you got your answer from), only yours and mine might be slightly different.

hotplate. max input none room vol from 5 to 10 = 50cm2 vent window required yes
single boiling ring max input none vent zero window required no

if i was to write it all down id be here all night 🙂

single boiling ring max input none vent zero window required no

Oh, i think thats were i've been going wrong.

On mine it says (for appliance type), and i quote:
"Single burner hotplate/boiling ring (2 or more to be treated as a hotplate)"

Max heat input:
"None"

Vent size:
"Nil"

Openable window or equivalent
"No"

Hey there, I know the whole exam thing can be very nerve racking i remember doing my ACS 4 years ago and bricking it, but the main thing is as stated before just try to relax and read the questions carefully. You wont be automatically failed unless you do something really dangerous or stupid, for example not knowing the tightness test procedure off the top of your head which you should anyway you will be fine. I found the main area i struggled with was controls as there are quite a lot (or there were )of old controls which i hadnt seen before. Read your book front to back on the controls and that will be in my opinion the toughest part as you have to be able to match components with descriptions of what they do so if you know this you should be able to work it out!
Hope this helps and i havent waffled too much!
