hi there i have been offered a makita BHP451RFE 18v LXT Lithium-lon drill.

my question is does anyone use these and are they any good for everyday use.

yes i have a number of makita lxt tools and they are very good quality. One year warranty may put you off but from my experience they last alot longer than bosch li-on tools.

personally im still to be convinced that li-on tools are worth the extra cost over nickel batterys.

I'm with you on this one AW. I've never liked li-on batteries. They die on you with little or no warning and stop if you push them. Really does my head in.

my bosch 36v sds i brought just under 2 years ago. It came with 3 batterys. I have only charged each battery 5 to 10 times and one of the batterys has already failed. The main trouble with li-on is the chemistry involved can not cope with high temps or high current draw for long periods of time. If the voltage is allowed to drop below a certain level it damages the cells which is why the batterys drop of in power suddenly. My advise would be to make sure if you dont use a tool for a while to atleast put some charge into the battery so it never falls below its critical level.
