Asbestos

View the thread, titled "Asbestos" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

your lucky then. If the seal is in a bad condition you will be at a higher risk even with your resp, overalls, h vac and sheeting down etc...... Your risk assessment and method statements will need to cover you for all possibilities.

better to employ proper qualified persons imo.

i agree to be fair. I wouldn't even change an asbestos rope seal in good condition never mind poor condition. Even though we can change rope seal when they are wet, I don't, I get some other gas bloke to do it if he wants to.

Best left to professionals in my opinion. If an asbestos rope seal is damaged then its new boiler time in my opinion. There may be some bloke who will swap it over, and fair enough, but not me, it stays where it is and its up to the customer to decide what they want to do.

Liking all the replies but 1 thing. Do you all agree that the customer should be informed that He/ She has asbestos in their property ie boiler or other appliances.

its your responsibility to find out if you have asbestos in your property. The company should have done a risk assessment on your boiler before hand and you would hope that the information would be told to the customer as it affects the product they are selling.

Got to say, I would just spray it loads with water too. Calling in the asbestos guys seems a bit heavy handed.

I had to factor in asbestos removers when I priced this job : IMG_3374.jpg

Nice picture of a netaheat hood on page 2 of 1st link. (right hand photo)

That hood has to come off to get the boiler down as there are 2 bolts behind it.

All the next generation will have similiar grief when fibre glass is outlawed.

That stuff is pure evil yet it's in every loft I go in. It's generally OK if left alone.

Asbestos was EVERYWHERE back in the 60's. We all have some in our lungs. I won't let my kids cuddle me if I've been in lofts. I'll strip to my pants as I come in. It's not fair on their little lungs.

The fact that half the stuff we work with from flux fumes, to lead, to solvent glue - all harms you is the one thing that spoils this business for me a bit.

I had my head in a cubby hole glueing waste pipes yesterday. The fumes don't even bother me anymore. Yet I take the lid off and the residents of the house all start saying "phhhhooooorrr that stinks". I think, what's up with me!?

Agree with dp, loft insulation leaves me coughing for days, hate the stuff. If pototoes were new today they would be banned straight way as green ones are lethal, just got to be sensible, any old boilers Im removing make me pop on a proper respirator not just a dust mask. However 6 months on a ton class mine hunter sleeping next to pipes lagged in asbestos has probably done the damage already as has 40 a day in my younger days.

mdf fibres, celotex when sawn, fibres from inset fire coals. The list goes on if its fire proof or insulating its gonna cause damage....dont know if your all aware but old vermiculite insulation '1980's could be contaminated with asbestos because of where it was mined. Theres loads of 80s lofts full of that ( nightmare if you drop a spanner)..

Yup, I agree completely with the last few posts.

I'm just hoping that the few precautions I make (like wearing a respirator when needed) help enough.

Life's a lottery anyway. You just got to live it, and be optomistic.

I couldn't work in an office. Dear me, what a grind.

Oh an LP, 6 months on a mine hunter. Madness!!

the thing that is really bad about this awarness about asbestos is, and i dont mean to bore but i watched a program about ancient egypt. they used to make slaves clothes out of the fibres and they knew it caused lung desease back then cause the clothing killed em. yet every falling to pieces school full of kids you work in is riddled.
