Hi all

Ive got two pipes to cut off to insert t's, but the pipes as they stand are really messy with large drips of solder.

I've got some emery cloth which with some elbow grease will remove the solder, but I intend to use compression fittings once I've cleaned the pipes.

I'm worried however that ill remove too much copper to get a good joint, is this possible? What's the best way to do this?

Thanks

^ That too. Before I read past the thread title I was mega confused. 😉

Let us know how you get on mate.

Heat it with a blowlamp and wipe it with your finger.
Separates the (trades)men from the (dis)guisers.

Or keep rubbing with the emery until you see copper. Better with the headphones in listening to a bit Rachmaninoff as you do that tho (rhapsody on a theme of paganini would be a good one; you know it but just don't know you do:wink🙂 or if that doesn't light your candle he does a decent vodka that will numb the senses for a bit

Hi, thanks both for the replies.

For some reason I'm trying to avoid blowtorches!

I've just googled rasp and rothenberger strips, is a rasp a file? And Rothenberger strips a branded emery cloth?

is a file better than solely using a emery cloth because the file is flat and only acts on the solder and not the pipe around the solder? Am I over thinking this?

A rasp is a file (half round, flat, rats tail or whatever - I think) they're okay for the job but could take you all day. If you don't want to use a flame try cutting the snotty piece out and joining new lenghts with push-fits or conex's. Regards - Turnpin.

Ha yes, ******* file, forgot about that name. Isn't that the half-round one?

As for the 'Regards Turnpin' thing, our phones must have got mixed up on the bar in the 'Arms.

Regards Turnpin

It came in all guises. Flat round and half round. It is the teeth that gets it its name but i like to think it was named after the tradesman (and all his ilk before him) who made me use it in -10º driving sleet putting up stacks while he sat in the van and claimed the bonus. B.....D!!!

Can't be bothered finding the link for you (drunk) but the only cheapo tools I've ever bought are files and they're not bad, do the job because they don't get used all that often. I may invest in some Bahco ones someday but my Poundland ones are still good.

Now here's a thing. Has anyone ever bought a really good file recently? (sorry Helpsy but £3.40 doesn't buy even a good file handle). Do they still make/sell them?

I bet there's a few staying at Her Majesty's pleasure that wouldn't mind one right now!

That wouldn't work these days as the bars have are hollow with another solid bar inside, dental floss used to work but the internal bar spins and you can't get a grip on it... so said my prison guard friend.

Just reporting back, this worked a treat, no leaks, I used Emery cloth and a small metal file.

looks like I was indeed over thinking it.
