called out to a house built in the mid 70s the house has black plastic pipe throughout the house with solvent glued joints i think it is 1/2 inch in size
any ideas what it is and what the actual size is or any other info on the pipe. i have to do some mods to the system am loathed to touch it until i know
i can get a match with fittings.

Black alkathene pipe.
take a look down the page to "similar threads" where it has been covered before.

Hi think you have the old poly-york (dark gray) be care full it gets brittle nothing available for it & nothing else will fit it, Was a place in Bracknell that used to do the adepters to copper, you will need the glue to go with it and it needs about 12 hrs B4 full presure, Estate in Saltash was done with it

mikegas is dead right about ur puzzle when we worked in Bristol/bath we came accross
this plasic pipe -

all the stuff about the copper being expensive is true so some cheeky monkeys produced
this plastioc pipe

- ALSO BEWARE if this job was done at the same time then there was some very...THIN WALLED RHODESION COPPER about same which if you muck about with it will just break up 1-2m away from where yr workin - just like cast iron does

Plumbase in Plympton sell adaptors for poly york JTS, or at least they used to a few years ago, with the copper inserts to go with it.

Yes Plumbase used to be very good for all sorts of odd fittings, but they struggle a bit now, may have some sitting around somewere worth a phone call.

Have an estate close to me thats all been done in this stuff, company near me still sells it but its 3/8" not 1/2". It looks like 1/2" but its an internal diameter so if you buy the 1/2 stuff its far too big. the company is called bep here's the link.

BEP Industrial Supplies - UK Thermoplastic Materials
Thanks for all the replys to my question you are right it is 3/8 not 1/2 as i thought managed to find that Plumbase sell adapters for Polyorc pipe
havent even got to the job yet not really looking forward to it.

Make sure that you get the right solvent for it ! unless they are compression, just be carefull with it, its got a habit of snapping off further along when you start touching it !! What part of Cornwall you working ??

also durapipe was another version used during the copper black out. Its still made and sold in imperial and metric sizes. Pipe centre and bss sell fittings in 1/2 and 3/8.
