Can some one please help me with the following question, thanks 🙂

In a standard 2 pipe domestic central heating system I understand normally the 22mm feed and return would go around the rads in a single circuit as it were. Imagine on a drawing the boiler is on the left and the rads are all on the right.

Now what if the drawing has the boiler in the middle and the rads on the left and right, before you T off the 22mm feed down to 15mm to any rads (last rad being 22mm to 15mm elbow rather than T) can you T the actual feed and return pipe itself e.g. 22mm to 22mm T piece than go around the rads in the normal way?

The reason I ask it in my house it would be far more convenient to run the pipe work like this. I am not proposing any valves (e.g. zoning) in the 22mm pipes and I am assuming (this is the main point) that the water will just as likely then left and right when it meets the T? unless all the TVR are turned off, in which case should I not fit a TVR to the last rad in each circuit

how big is the property?
you may not need a full 22mm primary circuit. doing so increases flow and aids performance on a large property. on a small property the gains are unnecessary and all that is acheived is increase of system water content which slows heat up time and wastes energy.

in terms of pipe layout you can do as you propose, the system will just need balancing upon completion

actual pipework layout and an idea on a page will rarely ever be anything like the same.
if it is all new why not zone?
where are the room stats?
where is the auto bypass?
and yes water will flow left and right when it gets to the tee.

get someone at least to come round and explain what is needed as far as meeting the building regs for the install.
maybe they would be willing to do part and leave some of the work to you?
 
I think you should get a professional heating engineer to look at your system and advise accordingly.
 
A drawing/diagram would help ? Sounds like your over complicating/confusing things.

Like others have said get someone in/ Buy a book for heating design

Natrually I am getting a gas safe registered plumber in the connect up/check the boiler etc. I just want to learn more and save some pounds installing the pipe work.

As for some additional information on the job, in answer to the questions above

Q: if it is all new why not zone?
A: Purhaps I should you mean room stat in each zone connected back to motorised values controlling flow to each zone I assume

Q: where are the room stats?
A: I was planning on one room state in the hall way near the stair well

Q: Where is the auto bypass?
A: I am installing a Potterton Titanium 40 HE Combi Boiler, therefore believe the bypass (presure relieve value) is intergal to the boiler.

It is a 4 bed house with 4 rooms (plus hall) down stairs and 4 bedrooms (plus landing) plus two bath rooms (not big bath rooms) plus a downstairs loo. Therefore 13 Rads in total.

You will probably end up paying more after you do it and find out it does n't work properly when floors etc are down.

What location are you ?

I was an electrician for many years, but now have an office job on a modist salary 🙁 so want to learn/do what I can re other trades to save a few quid (which her in doors will probably spend in any event) when doing up the house I brought.
