I have a central heating system that is about 7 years old with a condensing boiler in a two bedroom terraced house. It is a non sealed system with attic cold tank and a copper hot water cylinder.

I have found that when the boiler turns off (either because room stat is satisfied or water is hot enough) the water pump stops immediately, ie. it doesn't continue running for a few minutes. Is this correct? I thought the boiler kept the pump running for some time afterwards to prevent the boiler/pipes overheating from heat soak. Does this sound like I have a boiler problem and need a Gas Engineer?

Hi,

It depends on how it has been wired in. You are correct in stating that the boiler, being condensing should have the facility for pump overrun. The pump needs to be wired into the boiler, I'm guessing the pump is in an airing cupboard and therefore a wire will need to be rum from there to the boiler location.

If you tell us what boiler you have we can let you know for sure and then you can arrange for a gas engineer/electrician to wire it in for you.

Hi Thanks for your reply.

The boiler is an Ideal Icos HE15 - it doesnt seem to have a live feed for a pump? Should the pump connect to the demand line from the mid position valve?

The Icos does not have the facility for the boiler to operate a pump overrun feature. So there is no need to do anything, there are a few boilers that do not require a pump overrun due to there large heat exchanger.
