Why do some plumbers feel the need to coat everything with silicone!!

Just got back from changing two diaphragm in a school toilets (so it was not a DIY job!) and everything water touched had loads of silicone coated on!

Retaining nut, rubber washer in cistern, nut on the flush pipe. Then PTFE and silicone mix of the thread of the syphon!

I changed the diaphragms stripped all the PTFE all the silicone just nipped everything back up and guess what. No leaks!

So why do some plumbers insist on coating everything with silicone it's just not needed! The syphon is designed not to leak so why do some people still insist on this nonsence and make future maintenance jobs that little bit harder.

I've come across this loads of times and never got a call back for a leak.

why do people put lsx on compression fittings ? its a just incase to some people ! might of been a pain in the bum job at the time so he wanted it doing first time ! or it might of been the caretaker ?

its normally done by incompetent engineers tbh. Ive seen it done by loads of young plumbers, ive asked them why they do it and the normal responce is "its what your supposed to do" or "that was what i was taught"

not just young ens tho, ive seen very experienced plumbers do the same thing.

one thing i would say is theat there are some very poor wastes about, like those spring loaded bath wastes with that banjo type waste with 3 rubbers, what idiot designed that?

Silicone is for sealing baths/basins etc to walls etc. The only other time I use it is to seal kitchen and bath wastes when assembling them, to the top side only. I hate, hate, hate "plumbers" who seal flush valves, syphons with it. I especially hate "plumbers" who stick basin and toilets to the wall with it.

I live in a house that is rented from my girlfriend's Father, her cousin fitted the bathroom years ago and he has siliconed everything in sight. Went to change the leaking bath waste, he'd siliconed the rubber on the underside and it had distorted when it was tightened, he'd also siliconed the bath trap to the waste! Went to change the fill valve on the toilet, he'd siliconed the cistern lid to the pan!!!

I hate silicone for the wrong application with a passion

I love silicone to seal baths in the correct application

All fitters who use silicone for the wrong purpose are not engineers they are Neanderthal fitters

trouble is the tat sold by the sheds is of such poor quality and fit that people arent able to create a decent seal with whats provided, not everyone carries an assortment of washers etc or plumbers mate so they crack open another tube of gunk. working with expensive bathroom procelain is a treat when it all slots together cleanly, but not everyone can pay for it.

it isn't plumbers who do this kind of thing . . . .

subbies, general builders, diyers, landlords - the list goes on!

I have seen some shocking plumbing done in very nicely installed kitchens . .. .

The only thing worse than a basin siliconed to the wall is one that has been grip filled!

Damn thing took a load of plaster with it before I got the bleeder off . . ..

Some items I always carry to avoid using sillycone

Basin mate, Toolstation > Plumbing > Washers & Fixings > Basin Mate

Every new waste fitting gets one of these, they cost pittance and I add it to the bill anyway, no reason to not fit one, seals every time no plumbers mate, not ptfe, no sillycone.

For the gasket under the metal lip in the basin, if a foam gasket is not already provided (I hate hard rubber washers, they raise the edge as well and don't allow full drainage I use a hand cut piece of this

To stop pillar taps moving and get a good seal I use a thing called fix-a-tap

Merchants, too. An example: I bought a toilet and basin combination for a customer. When it came to installing I found the float valve couldn't let water through because the valve had no hole. The mounting holes for the cistern in the bowl were badly spaced and one was too small, which meant the cistern didn't sit properly on the bowl and therefore couldn't seal. I had to drill out the mounting holes.

The underneath of the basin was so rough that I had to get the LSX out to seal the damn thing. These should have been simple jobs, that took relatively no time at all to do.
