O-ring question regarding Lefroy basin tap

View the thread, titled "O-ring question regarding Lefroy basin tap" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice on a Lefroy basin tap. I have a tap where I need to remake the seal where the spindle of the tap goes into the body, through the gland nut. There looks to have been an o-ring, which has perished and there is a weep now when the tap is open, so I want to remake the seal. Lefroy tell me the design of the tap has changed and they can't tell me the size of the o-ring. I am thinking I just need an o-ring which will fit over the spindle snuggly, use some silicone grease where the o-ring is going to sit and then tighten the gland nut carefully, with some PTFE tape on the thread of the gland nut.

I have done the same repair on garden taps just using just PTFE, but does my route using the right sized o-ring etc. described above sound right?

Thanks in advance,

Mickey

Does the gland nut on this tap actually loosen or isit just for show? If it loosens can't you just repack gland with PTFE around tap spindle and abit of jointing compound and retighten gland?

Reality is that LB do not want you to repair.

Is it like this one?

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply. My tap could be like that, but I'm not sure how to get the spindle out to see. I have removed the brass jumper that takes the main washer and have it as it is in the picture below. I'm guessing I should I push from the thread end at the base?
It's a Lefroy LB1422 basin tap.

Yes. Give it a go. The shaft comes out through the top.
