Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone could possibly help me with my situation. I am 34 years old and a 1,5 years ago I decided that I would go to train4jobs trade gateway to gain the qualifications NVQ2 and then NVQ3 to pursue a career change into the plumbing sector. In the 1,5 years I done all theory and practical training and then I seem to have hit a bit of a wall, I am looking for a competent plumber with min 5 years of experience to complete my NVQ level 2 plumbing folder, which means 2 maintenance jobs like cleaning shower trap or bottle trap…. and 4 Fault founding jobs like replace washer on a tap ……Willing to work on unpaid, these small tasks should be done within a week so I only need a week of work. If I can complete these tasks then my trade gateway will offer a 3 week onsite work to finish my portfolio where a fully qualified NVQ Assessor will be with me. Any advice would be really appreciated I am in the Salisbury (Wiltshire) area. Thank you

Are you sure the person needs to have 5 years' experience? As my college uses City and Guilds, which requires the WBR for a level 2 to have one of the following: 5 years' full time experience OR plumbing craft OR NVQ2 in plumbing OR recognised as a plumber by the JIB.

Hi Ric.
Yes 5 years experience needed. Please find attached the requirements.

That's fine. I wasn't not believing you lol, I just wondered if someone in your college had made a mistake (it happens often) in reading the City and Guilds' requirements.

But your college is obviously working to a different set of rules as City and Guilds talks of Component Repair or Replacement / Maintenance tasks and never uses the word 'fault' in this section, as far as I can remember.

These course providers make my pis$ itch.

For all the dosh they charge, one would have thought that THEY should find willing mentors. And pay them.

Hi Ric
I’m experiencing the same problem as you with the same training provider and I have contacted City & Guilds as to clarify the requirements to go onsite for 3 weeks to be accessed for the NVQ and City & Guilds says that it’s not their requirements. In my personal opinion they’re doing this to us as many people will not be able to get the expert plumber to facilitate them doing the 2 maintenance and 4 repairs easily and therefore unable to complete the course but still liable to pay them for the course and then we’re the losers as they have already been paid. I’m living in London and I have travelled all the way to Bristol so far and done a week with an expert but after seeing all he needs to send them he’s refused to sign them off for me so I’m back to square 1! Good luck mate as we’re in the same boat here.

You're with City and Guilds?

I know the feeling though. I had a workbased recorder who felt the City and Guild standards weren't high enough and would sign anything that he felt my college shouldn't be accepting. My college said it happens often and were quite helpful. I'm sorry your college is being so unhelpful.
