Hi,

We recently had a leak from the pressure relief valve on the inlet control set. It appears this was due to the expansion vessel needing a recharge. This was re-pressurised back to 3bar, the relief valve continued to leak and so was replaced. Now when the hot water is on, once its up to temperatures (the cold feed pipe gets warm) the new pressure relief value is leaking (dripping).

The pressure relief valve was replaced with a 3bar item. The expansion vessel is set to 3bar, the pressure reducing valve is set to 3bar, and the new relief valve is 3bar. In my head that means the relief valve will open very quickly at the slighest variance? I found the manual for the hot water tank (Range Tribune HE) and it mentions a 6bar relief valve. Does it sound like the plumber has fitted the wrong valve?

Thanks.

Yep was it a Pressure relief valve or a temprature/pressure relief valve? X

I'm almost positive that any parts replaced on a pressurised cylinder need to be replaced with the same original parts.

I'm sure the one on megaflo's are 10 bar fitted one a couple of months ago £ 85 ouch

It was just a pressure relief valve on the inlet control set. The hot water tank itself has a 7bar/90 degree t&prv. The manual says; pressure reducing valve 3bar, expansion relief valve 6bar (the one replaced with 3bar), pressure and temperature relief valve 7bar/90 degree.

Should be a 6 bar if the instructions say so.every time you warm the hot water it will expand and open the relief valve if the pressure reducing valve is set to 3 bar

Thanks all. I thought that was the case but not being familiar with these things I thought I'd check there wasn't some reason for having everything the same pressure (even though it sounded wrong).

The people that fitted it are G3 registered so I don't know how they messed it up. Unless the old valve was 3bar as well?! Its a new build so I guess the fitters could of messed up in the first place. I'll give them a call back to see what they say before they bill me. I'll also see if my neighbours would be willing to let me have a nose in their airing cupboard at there system.

if they were G3 then they would have known it was wrong. please dont mess with this yourself, they are potential bombs 🙂

Regardless of what valve was fitted, the engineer should have ordered a valve from the manufacturer or a supplier and obviously they would have sent the correct one. Just because something is already there it doesn't mean it's correct.

Sharn't be touching it with a barge pole, I don't touch normal plumbing let alone anything pressurised.I just wanted to make sure I had my facts straight before going back to them.

Have you checked the expansion vessel membrane is'nt split which will tell you its at 3 bar on a gauge . Press the straeder valve to see if water comes out.

Yep. Just air comes out, checked the pressure using a tyre pressure guage. Thanks.

There's a sticker on the side of most range tribunes that tells you the rating of the expansion valve & t&pr that'sneeded.
If that's not there then the info isn't exactly hard to find.
Sorry but it sounds to me like you've tried to sort this yourself or your plumber is a twit.

Well, I've definately not done this myself. As mentioned I refuse to touch anything water related, I've seen the mess it can make (faulty ball valve on cold water tank in previous house). There is a sticker on the tank and I have the manual for it (came with the house).

I popped round to my neighbours and they let me look at their identical system, lo and behold 6bar 🙂. Will be having words with the plumber, especially as they said if the valve kept leaking the expansion vessel would need replacing. Hmm.
