Hi

I'm not a plumber, but I'm putting this out on here in order to ask the experts (you guys).

I'm a Mechanical Engineering student and was given a project to analyse efficiency in a conventional condensing boiler. All was going well until today when I was told it had to be a gas fired boiler by my lecturer and I've had to start again.

I'm basically going to run a flow/heat transfer computer simulation on it and check that the results line up with what would be expected. Then I'm going to try to optimise the design and see how the results change.

I originally built and modelled a Grant Vortex as it was one of the only boilers I could find clear images, specs and videos of online. The main focus of the analysis is the condensing chamber. Everything else is pretty much superfluous except the primary heat exchanger would be nice to model as well. I'm not entirely sure why it can't be a oil burning boiler as the basics of what goes on in the condenser part is pretty much the same regardless of the fuel used. I have to re-do it all now and I don't have long to get it done now.

My problem is that I'm finding it very hard to find images and specs of the actual condensing chambers online. I have to make the design quite accurate the existing designs.

I know it is a long shot but, does anybody know of a place where I can get any old spare parts? If not, does anybody know where I can get some in-depth information of boiler schematics? Ideally with 3d images in it? Also, information about things like the flue gas flow rates and temperatures as they re-enter the heat exchanger would be needed too.

I know it's an odd request but I'd appreciate any help you can offer, it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Dave B

local scrap dealer, look for 105he boiler, as this was based on the old 105e non condensing boiler and the he part was an additional condenser bolted on so old boiler and new part, and fair few falling apart now, hit baxi web site for pictures undr engineer section discontinued models

Hi Dave B
I am pretty sure that only a boiler manufacturer could provide you with that sort of level of information (& they might not be to willing to give it away) but it might be worth getting in contact with a few of the smaller ones try Alpha or Ravenheat or MHS or Atag etc
Good luck

Phone one of your local installers who do finance installs or advertise free installs (smaller locals only) and see if you could get one from them. Its a long shot but worth a try.
Could also advertised on gumtree or the likes for a redundant boiler.
Good luck with the project.

If you put your location on here I'm sure someone will have ripped out a boiler that you can look at. As most condensers have aluminium or stainless heat exchangers there's not much scrap value in them anyway.

Location is NG10 3QP. I think I may have just landed myself a boiler that was going to be scrapped 🙂. Thanks for all your help guys.
