lame plumber

went to a broken ariston combi on 28-12 and it was full of water, knackered. Quoted £1600 to replace with intergas 24/18 combi, 5 yr warranty etc etc. New gas run and condensate run needed, old boiler on gable end of attic in horrendous access poisiton as normal. Customer desperate to have his holiday home water back on so agreed to do it yesterday(monday). Got message sun night hes bought his own boiler, will I install it and he'll buy everything, followed by more what does he need to get calls until finally I call him back and tell him to look eleswhere for help!! if he's like this before I start, whats he going to be like when it breaks in a few months time, demanding I warranty somethings he has bought!!.

Stressed but calming down after a tipple went to bed. Popped into merchant on monday for a replacement pump (grunfoss15/60 being as its still 2012), to find a local builder/developer (jack of all trades) picking up a pottern promax for his mate, complaining about cowboys plumbers charging £1600 to install a boiler that only takes 4 hours to do!!!!!!!!!!

Put 2 and 2 together and saw merchants face collapse as he was worried I might have a chat with said builder in the sales area. Being full of good cheer etc,I let it go, theres a time and place for everything, revenge is better served cold etc etc. Turns out the merchant sold the boiler at massive discount, as builder is good custard over the year and he hadnt realised said boiler was replacing one I was going to install so he lost twice over now I didnt need one!

All in all a ****ty end to the year but reminded myself its not worth getting involved with tight wads anyhow and not having to crawl around a filthy attic will preserve the knees a bit longer. So theres one more boiler going in with the help of a builder who knows every thing and he'll have it in and done in 4 hours done to gsr and building regs standards!!

you gave him a fair price for the job and its not good enough for some folk, we have all been there many times. if you had offered to dig the garden build him a garage and tarmac his drive all for the same price he would have still said "can i let you know"

You not reporting the builder?

I think you should report builder to make sure it has been installed by some one who is GSR you don't wont to be reading in the paper in the future if some thing happens because of a bad install,
I register all appliances that we install as I assume we all do but does make me laugh when the customer gets a letter from gas safe asking if they would like there new install inspected but the appliances that never get registered eg builder no one knows about so make the call or what is the point in being GSR what do the rest of you think happy new year to you all

Typical I am afraid nowadays. We often quote inclusive then at the last minute they source the boiler. It was sort of helpful before we were vat registered to keep the turnover down. Best thing is when they get it over the Internet and it arrives damaged ! With PTS they swap immediately on any issue.

Pass it on to HSE, then a fine which will hopefully stop him doing it in future.

gsr wont investigate if customer doesnt complain.

hse wont investigate unless there is serious injury or death

buildings regs cant do anything unless work taking place they can inspect, if custard says nothings happening they cant do ought

all in all the only ones obeying the rules are gsr techies, and they get prosecuted if anything goes wrong and have to pay for the privilege of being responsible!

funny old world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
