Hi.

Potential customer has a leaking 10l Ariston Europrisma cylinder. Probably just a flange gasket or the magnesium anode needs replacing.

While I feel this is easily the sort of task I can tackle as I am very good at mending things, I get the impression I'd need my G3 to install such a cylinder even though it's only a 10 litre affair.

Technically you need G3 even to install a vented cylinder, these days, I think (which is a bit ridiculous seeing as it's on the NVQ2, but let's not go there...)? But do I need a G3 just to repair it? Just thought I'd run this by the forum. I can't afford to turn every job down just in case I need a certificate for something or other, but if I genuinely do need the ticket, then I'll have to turn the job down (and put a G3 course on my to-do list for future work).

Thank you!

Thanks Shaun. I'll turn the job down then. In any case, even if I hadn't needed a G3 to repair, it would seem silly to take the job on and then find the leak can't be fixed and then need to turn down the replacement job.

On a technical note, because, having spent much time reading the IOM, I felt I could see the one possible failure that could be repaired, does the flange gasket around the heating element rarely fail then? I'd have thought that rubber clamped between the water tank and the element would be a common point of failure. Perhaps I'm swayed by the fact that my old school biology lab had a (larger) unvented cylinder and the inevitable fix when it leaked was to call a plumber to replace the element.

Perhaps it's more common for the tank itself (even though this one is enamel lined) to rust through in your experience?

It’s a plastic tank that’s lined you normally find they leak / split through the front door / element block and you can’t get spares cheap enough (new heater is around the 100 mark)
