Hello
Can someone please help me with the following question.

I live in a house built around 1950

The old stopcock looks knackered and I want to replace. I can turn the water off in the street to my house as the water board man left me a key to the manhole

Now I am not 100% sure about the size of the incoming main to my kitchen, it looks old and has what looks like very old chunky compression fitting, therefore would appear imperial. However I have measured the diameter of the pipe the best I can and it is over 1/4 and under 1/2 inch and very very close to 15mm

Basically is their an old imperial pipe which is very close to 15mm, and if so what size please?

Thanks
EBrant

make your post total to ten or more then send a picture and we be able to assist you more...regards Turnpin:smile5:

Thanks everyone I will take a picture and upload tomorrow.

There was a suggestion above of 3/8 (thanks for the suggestion) but if I worked that out correctly 3/8 inch is 9.525 mm e.g. 25.4 / 8 X 3 = 9.525 so cannot be 3/8. I think a 15mm compression fitting may do the job, but will upload a picture along side a piece of 15mm pipe (if I can find one)

Thanks All

fit a new tap after the knackerd one?

if its very thick 1/2 you may need a 16mm to 15mm compression or a socket forming tool to make a 15mm socket to sweat.

Having taken a closer look at it, I am sure it is 1 5/8'' pipe which = 15.875mm (not sure if a 15mm olive will fit over it) I will check with my local plumbers merchant to see if they have 5/8'' to metric compression joint, or as above if I can get a 16mm or 5/8'' olive and use with a 15mm compression joint

Thanks everyone

If it's 15.8mm, and copper. That is the outside diameter of old imperial sized copper.
If it is, a compression fitting will do fine.

Hello All
Firstly thanks to everyone for the replies

I am 100% sure it is copper (cleaned up a section directly below the current stopcock)

I recon this is the answer, thanks Chalked 🙂 , do you mean a standard 15mm compression fitting should do (e.g. olive will squeeze over 15.8mm pipe)

Thanks again

you can get 1/2 imperial compression rings, but a 15mm one will fit.
