Hi all,

Not sure that this is the right forum or site even for this! But not sure where else to go.
We have a problem with one particular food smell coming from a neighbours flat and we think we know which neighbour. It's a bit of an odd one as we only smell it once or twice a week and the nearest thing I can think it smells like is burning onions or garlic but it's an odder smell than that, perhaps what's left of the food odour once it's travelled into our flat somehow. Also it's always this same smell never anything else yet they must be cooking everyday in fact they told us as much. So must be one particular thing they cook is potent of they're using an appliance that they don't always use.. Having spoken to the neighbour they have not been able to find an issue with their ventilation or indeed don't smell the smell at all even when we have said specifically what days/times we smell it,presumably it just smells like cooking to them.

We generally smell it strongest in rooms along one wall of the flat including our bathroom which doesn't have a window and neither does their kitchen in that case as i suspect their kitchen is below our bathroom. They have an extractor unit in their kitchen apparently but perhaps it doesn't Vent to the outside but is merely recirculated as I don't see a pipe on an outside wall that is wide enough bore for an extractor, our ducting to outside is probably 80mm diameter. Their are two pipes but their bore is more like 30-40mm not sure what they're for, maybe boiler extract. I also wondered if their extractor filter is old and not really doing the job.

So basically I'm at a loss, maybe there is a leak in the ducting if it does vent outside or maybe it's just filtering up through the floor..
I don't think there is much we can do, we rent and so do they and seems it's a structural issue but letting agencies not interested. At least when it's summer we can vent the flat by opening all the windows!

Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to what could be the problem or indeed solution! More difficult when it's not your property that's the issue.

Thanks
