I am currently in the army but have obtained my 6129 and my acs in domestic natural gas and LPG. I am planning on a career in plumbing once I leave the army and want to spend any spare time I have before I leave gaining as much experience as I can.

The guy I worked with for a couple of weeks to build my portfolio has said he may have a couple of weeks work on site for me over Easter but it is not definite, however I will be chasing this up closer to the time.

What I’m really looking for is regular weekends with someone where I can lend a hand and learn as much as possible. I am aware that a lot of guys are wary of taking someone on to give them experience or to teach them what’s what as it could be competition in the future. I would not be staying in the area once I leave the army so no worries there. The other problem I’m aware of for you guys is that you can’t afford to spend the time teaching another person the ins and outs, so in that case I’d be more than happy to just stand by and watch you work so I am not a hindrance to you. In between I can fetch tools and kit and make your life a bit easier while seeing what goes on. Also you’ll have some one to chat to in between jobs and help pass the time.

I’m in the Kent area, Maidstone to be exact but would be happy to travel anywhere in the area within reason. I am happy to give my time up for free, I am very polite and well presented and would be happy to come along in overalls and safety boots if required. I am 27 years old and bring with me all the good attributes that a career in the army gives.

Even though you may not be able to help for whatever reason after you have read this I’d still appreciate your advice on what else I can do. The thing I am most confident in is servicing gas appliances but would feel happier to go out in to the world with some guidance to build my confidence.

Just a couple of things, should I get myself gas safe registered now or wait until I can actually go out by myself and work? (someone might be more willing to take me on if I was GSR)

If you was in my position what would you do now?

Thanks for reading, feel free to PM me if you want to take advantage of free labour!

if you get the gas safe registration I would say you would stand a better chance because you may well be more appealling to say a plumber who has not passed acs a then he can do boilers well you learn how to do them too and then you can sign off the work if its been you who has helped to do it.

Good point thanks!

You could try and drum up some work for family and friends or possibly even wider. However if you come across something that you aren't comfortable with you could always sub it out to another plumber and work with them?

Could 1 of the moderators amend my title please as i have made a stupid spelling error. Thanks, i do not know how to change it myself.

I'm going to write to plumbers in Kent starting today, for those of you who run your own business what would you suggest a typed letter or a handwritten one?
