Hello All,

I'm Adam, 29 from Kent. Currently I work in outdoor advertising which I have been doing for over a decade. Every now and then I do some free lance graphic design work as well but nothing substantial. I'm finding it impossible to carry on in my current full-time job due to ultimately a lack of work, this isn't a quick conclusion I've jumped to, I have given it some serious thought and often come back to the idea of becoming a plumber.

Currently I'm looking into what qualifications I well need to get started as well as what options are available to me. I'd like to get a steady job as a plumbers mate/apprentice and do a one day a week college course but may consider a more intensive full-time course to speed up the process of getting full-time work.

I have already obtained lots of qualifications in my life so far and am not a person who simply gives up easily I'm extremely focused on what I set out to achieve. So far I have 11 GCSE's A-C, a BTEC diploma in Art and Design at college and a degree in Graphic Design at university.

So, I am familiar with realizing that having the qualifications doesn't mean ill get a job at the end of a course. For me I want a job first where I can learn from experience and see if it is actually going to be practical before I waste more time and money. Once I have a secure job I well happily do a one day a week course.

Any advice on which routes I should consider well be muchos apprecited''

Thanks in advance

Adam

Apprenticeships are definitely the best way but its very difficult to get one. Good luck mate, work is scarce for most people at the moment

Do you know of any companies or private businesses that offer apprenticeships? Thanks for the good luck ill need it. Its the same in most job sectors at the moment but that's not to say its impossible to get a job or get work.

good luck mate your going to need it, try and get an apprenticeship its not exclusive to young people i know plenty of people who have done apprenticeships at 26,29,40 etc. We currently have a 26 year old whos in his 4th year working with the firm I'm with, a basic salary for a qualified plumber is around £23-25k but you may find its mostly a case of who you know not what you know, you may be able to offer some of your skills though in return

Hi SimonG and GQuigley67,

I suspect it well still be competitive in the plumbing business. But I feel its more practical than trying to find work as a designer. Every single job I look at asks for one to 2 years experience, regardless of having the right qualifications, its very off putting and the demands on the applicants in design are pretty insane. So I've had to come to terms with maybe just considering working free lance as a designer and finding a new career path to earn a crust.

I have worked building conservatories and fitting windows when I was a young lad so I'm used to working with all sorts of tools. Now in my current job as a billposter in outdoor advertising I work and have worked using all sorts of different tools/equipment, including using cherry pickers, fork lifts and having to be aware of all sorts of health and safety info as we work using ladders 80% of the time. So as well as having qualifications/skills I am also able to get my hands dirty and carry heavy equipment if necessary and get involved where ever I can. This is why I'm considering plumbing, as I feel it ticks all the boxes for me.

I hope I can find an apprenticeship as I think its my best option. Going to college and not being employed would only set me back. I'm enthusiastic to get to work and learn first hand but would be more than prepared to get the necessary qualifications if in the trade.

Sorry to ramble on but I think it outlines how I've come to this conclusion...

Many times the was water from the current cycle is the rinse water from the previous cycle. So if there was crap still in the rinse water it could clog the holes. The reuse is to save on water.
