Hi all,
Discovered a problem with our central heating not working yesterday, I am a plumbing newbie though so please treat me gently! We have a Baxi 80 HE plus combi boiler, with what looks like a s plan system with a pair of Honeywell V4043 valves attached to separate heating and hot water flows, with a room thermostat and a gigantic hot water cylinder.
The first thing I noticed was the pressure in the system was low - around 0.7 bar. I gather the boiler will cut out when the pressure is too low, however the "interlocked" light on the boiler was off - in fact the entire boiler was off. Anyway first, I repressurised up to 1 bar.
Then I checked hot water, which correctly triggered the boiler into life after running the hot taps for a couple of minutes, so it seems the boiler and pump are working fine.
I gather from a wiring diagram of such a system, that the boiler and pump switched lives are run through the "s plan value", which in turn are triggered by the room stat and timer system. Therefore the problem would appear to be either of those three things. My naive looking at the timer system is that it appears to be fine, and on the room stat you can hear when the relay engages, and so i'm inclined to believe that it's working too.
And so I've come to the conclusion that the heating s plan valve is broken in some way. Is this a correct assessment? I gather from a quick google that you can replace the actuator on these, but I don't want to do so if that's not the problem!
What should my next steps be folks? Should I check for live on the valve's motor pins before blaming the value? Is there a way to check which part of the valve might not be working?
