i,ve just fitted a new toilet.when you flush the loo the boiler fires up.any ideas?
as the guy is going nuts.

does the bouiler fire and shut down straight away? dose it run for the time the cistern fills?
Can you trace the pipe work from the cistern, thus confirm the it is a cold supply, ie it tees under the floor and up to the basin and cold comes out the basin? turn off isolator under cistern connect hose over bath and turn on, if it runs cold not your prob, if its one of the new float valves they can shut off quite hard which could trick the flow switch to fire! is it a torbeck, did you fit the flow ristricter? Just because next doors is fine means nothing, has he got a full service history for the boiler. if you can prove that the ther is a cold feed to the cistern then that should surfice, as he got you in to do the bathroom, not service the boiler!!

I'd do this even if it had an external overflow at least this would eliminate the boiler question, totally agree.
See if you can turn on a cold tap very slowly to replicate the fill valve, I dont fix boilers but does anyone know if a worn divertor will trigger the boiler if a cold is turned on a certain way?
Just thinking out loud really, also maybe crossflow? You've somehow tee'd the cold cistern feed into the hot aswell?

Before you walk into the customers house tomorrow morning, take a deep breath expect a bit of flack and calmly explain that you've come back to try and sort the issue and that being humpy isn't doing anyone any favours.
Then take your time and work through the suggestions here. When your getting annoyed, stop, take a step back and take your time. If the hot has been crossed with the cold explain how your going to sort it and job done.
IF it is a problem with the boiler explain this to the customer but again expect some flak, even if this isn't your doing (probably isn't) you know you'll get the blame so this will have to be discussed....

As per steveb hold down float valve and let it run, if it runs cold and stays cold your ok'ish. you could try and snap the taps closed to see if that dose the same! turn off the cold feed to the boiler under it, flush cistern if it fills, not on hot! if you can eliminate crossed pipe work it points to the boiler.
don't you hate days like that, the usual custard quote is "well it was fine before you started" usually followed by "never had a problem before you touched it" closely followed by "why did you get me in then if everything if s fine"

I mean, while fitting the bathroom you or someone must have noticed the toilet cistern was hot while you were there and before it was all tiled.

Probably it was your toolbox that scared him!! he was fine before you opened it!!
oh dear. you have my sympathies...
and yeah, hold inlet open. if cistern gets hot = your prob. if not = his prob.

Probably fairly easy to diagnose if you're in the bathroom, providing the customer isn't stood over you and not saying anything. I mean whats all that about.? I'm too polite to tell them to 'do one'
I had to tell a customer off recently though, I was there ages fiddling with a shower valve that another guy had not been able to put back together, she stood over over me with a right attitude. Talk about putting me off, she then had the cheek to say "if you couldn't fix it why didn't you say you could on the phone?" I lost my cool and told her I couldn't fix it while you were on my back. She went downstairs and 5 mins later I'd fixed it.
All I needed was some breathing room, unbelievable.

Bye the sounds of this saga you have cocked right up but the only saving grace you may have is if you have mixed all hot and colds up you can cross at boiler if not get ready to start ripping up tiles and sort it would you pay if it was done in your house don't think so

This reminds me of advice given to me by my ex boss when I'd screwed up big on a job. He took me to one side and said, "At the end of this year are you going to look back and say that was the job that ruined me? If the answer to that is no then you've just simply got to grin and bear it - get on with it, do whatever it takes to sort it out, leave everyone as happy as possible and move on."

without knowing the piping layout then we couldn't possibly say, well i couldn't anyways, You metioned electric shower earlier in thread and i've asked a couple times does combi fire up when in use and still awaiting an answer
Crossing feeds is easy. Everyone has done it. Luckily I've so far noticed when I run the taps or fill the loo before tiling begins. It pays to be a bit paranoid in plumbing. Check everything repeatedly, all the time. Suspect everything, every noise. Work on the assumption that every inanimate object is out to ruin your day and you should be ok.

you may be able to sort out his prob (or divest yourself of responsibility) with relative ease - if it's just crossed feeds i'm sure something can be done. but re-instating the CWSC to the lady downstairs could be a bigger faff.

The guy is too vague on the details, he has to be taking the ....
Any plumber should know how to fix it, find the point of connection and swap the pipes round, simples.
If you are gen, my advice is too take protection... Maybe a taser incase the guy goes mad

If this isn't some kind of wind-up may i suggest next time you take on a jog like this that you go buy yerself a couple of rolls of insulting tape, one red and one blue and mark each pipe accordingly
(by this i mean red on the hot and blue on the cold) this should help avoid any confusion and consequently the nightmare situation you now find yourself in. And if i were you i'd forget about crossing any pipes at the boiler, dont want the w/c filling with gas do we?

I have only just seen this thread.
I just had a quick look back through the answers and I cannot find any confirmation that the pipes are crossed?
Does the wc fill with hot? or does it just fire the boiler when flushed?
If it only fires the boiler, isolate the cold mains to the boiler and try again, Does it still fire up?
What I was thinking is the cold mains pressure is very low and the wc is then flushed there could be enough movement in the pipework to make the boiler flow switch?
As for downstairs loosing water, I would guess at shared tank and you have cut off their supply.

too long to read it all ,I had it the same ! fitted combi and toilet cistern nice and worm ! boiler kicking on every time some one uses the loo ! told customer to change faulty mixer in bathroom wash basin ! he could not be bothered to pay for it ,I told him if you do not fix it ,in the event of fault to boiler manufacture will invalidate policy ! any way check mixer tap or shower for cross flow

You can just imagine a 15mm Speedfit tee coming off the outside tap and up the side of the house, unclipped and probably through the bathroom window and into the cistern.
Going back Monday to lag it... ah hah!

seen from one of his previous posts that he done a 6 week fast track course and it was a piece of cake, but the eastern europeans in the class were struggling ???? I replied to the other post which was pretty much similar to this one, what a weirdo....I see he's from ayrshire, says it all lol !!
