Just wondered if anyone could help. I was decorating a flat today and noticed this in their garden. I don't know anything about plumbing but is this a soil pipe that's leaking sewerage into their garden? What could have caused this to happen and what would be the best course of action to take.
Thank you

The connector has fallen apart.
The plastic ring lower down the pipe that's being held up with a drain rod, belongs on the straight connector to hold the seal tight.

It needs a new straight connector fitting.

Thankyou for the quick replies it is very much appreciated. how much roughly can the landlord expect to pay a plumber to carry out this work?

Did you do the taste test?

I didn't but I poked it with a stick and it was soft in texture so I ran. Is this a major health hazard? Could someone get cholera from this?

I enlarged that photo and the "rubber seal" turns out to be not that at all, but it is the plastic retaining part of the connector, broken and upside down.
Looks like someone has attempted to put it back on

Whats the best saniflow type pump for a downstairs cloakroom toilet rpm ?

Thanks for the replies the drain rod is simply wedged between the wall and the fence (which is out of the picture ) to hold up the fence that's falling down.

I mean Rubbish has literally been leaking into their garden for god knows how long . How do people live like that. What's their affliction?

Perhaps they are trying to improve their soil? I would prefer a properly-managed compost toilet to a smelly mixture of poo and water though!

It does need a new coupling as suggested but it could more easily be fixed with a rubber soil pipe coupling and that would avoid having to shift the pipe vertically, just shift the pipe horizontally and slip it on after giving it a clean first obviously. I was going to suggest jet washing but then you don't want Rubbish flying all over the place, it'll have to be a bucket of suds and a stiff brush to the lucky tradesman.
