Hi all, I'm looking at a straight combi boiler swap for a customer. Pressure drop calculations tell me that 5 burner cooker will be under gassed by about 25 - 30%.

I'll try to keep it short here...

Gas meter is on the front wall of the house, the 28mm gas pipe goes under the floor through the front room, dining room, whole length of the kitchen, under small area by the back door and finally through the length of the bathroom, where the boiler is.
I can only get to the pipe in the front room - floor boards. There's laminate floor in the dining room and concrete throughout the rest of the house with vinyl tiling. 22mm pipe pops out just by the boiler.
The large cooker is hooked up in 22 just under the boiler via the outside.
Ground surface at the side of the house is concrete throughout. The customer doesn't want a new pipe on the side of the house, there are 2 doors to go over.

I've explained the need to upgrade the gas pipe to the customer.

But, here's what I don't get, how British Gas has come in and given a quote for 25SI WB in the same spot without any gas pipe increase AND leaving the very 5 burner cooker under gassed by at least 25-30% !? Does BG knows something I don't know!? I really thought we are working to the same rules!?

What's your opinion on this one, please? Thanks.

They won't have noticed the 7kw cooker, oh that's right it's 5 burners ok, well it'll be ok, just take longer to cook things. But luckily while you are waiting for dinner to slow cook you will be able to go for a run to warm up while the heating slowly gets up to temperature.

Re: I don't get BG...

BG man defo seen the cooker and the outside gas pipe to it.
I've more then triple checked my calculations. Also, I understand, no customer wants to see a job become a mega job. And it was actually me who suggested they get BG in to quote and confirm the need to increase pipe size. I feel like I've shot myself in the foot but I'm not cutting corners.

If it has 28 mm through house, how far is the run in meters ?

If its a fairly normal run, it should be big enough ?

Why do you think the cooker is under gassed, have you tested the BP ?

That's the trouble - I only can get under the floor in the front room and don't know how far the 28 goes. And I've done my calculations to as if it stops by the bathroom entrance, any shorter - the drop will be even more. Sorry, don't have the figures with me right now.

I would test the boiler WP with three burners lit on the hob, see what you get.

You may be surprised !

Install I'm on at the min was serviced by bg 5 months ago... 28kw combi, fed by 15mm all the way from the meter, gas pipe runs in the dirt, under the door, thru the wall with no sleeve, along the skirting unclipped. Gas leak where a fitting had cracked etc. All the bg report said was "boiler in good condition but parts no longer available"
