im sure someone who is looking at it knows what it means, otherwise they shouldnt be touching it

And now you know why plumbers shouldn't do electrics and vice versa! fortunately I employ both.

From an eleyricians point of view I am appalled at this thread, if this had been talking about doing something with a gas boiler croppie would have shut down pages ago.

Multi-core signalling cable is in stock at any good electrical wholesaler. Never use a single insulated (i.e. non in T&E) as anything other than as the cpc - if you don't know what that is , it's precisely why you shouldn't use it, and if you do then you'll know why you shouldn't use it.

your missing the point, the earth cable is there to protect the cable it does not matter if the clock or whatever is double insulated,it is against regs to use it as a control wire ,thats how fires start by not using a earth as its intended

Happy to be proven wrong gasman if you tell me what regulation it is. I've double checked BS7671 and can't find any reference to it. The only reference to a circuit protective conductor that cannot be identified as anything other than that at termination is a single core cable, the reason being I would imagine is to stop anyone cutting through it kid way through where it is not clearly identified. The cable is double insulated, so is the programmer. A bit like any appliance with only 2 cores, double insulated.

gasmanxxxr1, blue is a line/live/phase colour in old colours. If you taped a line red the blue could be mistaken for a line at the same time. For the sake of a roll of brown insulating tape (or preferable sleeping) just to it right to save any confusion.
