Limescale in pipes

View the thread, titled "Limescale in pipes" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

Hi. I have had a significant build up of limescale in the pipes taking old water from the shower / bathroom sink and sewage from the toilet. This has been clearer by plumbers using a Picote and directly accessing the pipes externally.

The drainage engineer said that now that the limescale has set in, the issue is just going to recur every few months particularly as there is some sitting water in our pipes. Does this seem right? We have lived here for four years with no issues but he said once it sets in it keeps coming back.

I have not been able to find anything about this online.

There shouldn't be any standing water sitting in your pipes. They should have an appropriate downhill gradient, known as 'fall', to prevent this from happening.

Do you live in an areas of very hard water? Have you considered fitting a water softener?

The camera suggests there is not enough of a fall. The plumber thinks we may need the internal pipe work re done which I am obviously keen to avoid.

It is a hard water area. We could get one fitted but this is our first major issue in four years. We are also thinking of moving in a year or so.

Do you think it could really build up again in a few months? Given we have had no problems in four years? I don’t really know the science of limescale. Is it a bit like rot - once it sets in it just keeps coming back quicker?
