Hi all just wondered what everyone does on there quotes for materials say its £50 do you put 10 or 20 % on top but do you do the same even if it's £2000 materials which would be £400 on top at 20%. Thanks Martyn.

The best thing about the Internet = ****. The worst thing = everybody finding out how much materials cost. Very difficult putting mark up on when there's no trade and retail.

I'd never get any work if I put 20% on my materials, I normally settle on 10%. The problem I find is that our 'trade' prices are often no different to what the custards can get them for on tinternet.

But if you give the customer material at cost you simply give them a free warranty, remember when something leaks or breaks they phone, you go, see a faulty part and then exchange it, so there needs to be a decent mark up to cover this, or they supply and you charge for the visit

I agree with you all, but just last week I had a gas valve go on a back boiler. Trade price £150 ish, they were going new on fleabay for much less than that which the custard called to inform me. I explained warranty etc and that I refuse to fit ebay parts even if 'new'. Sometimes though I think it makes the custard think that I am a con artist when they can now simply google a part/boiler etc and see such prices.

A pcb for a isar for example, trade price from Parts Center is £199 inc vat ( I normally get a better price at branch of around £175 ish), retail they state is £285.05 (joke I know). A quick look on fleabay and I can get a new one for £90.00.

you need to change your merchant isar pcb at mine £135.00 inc vat

I don't care what price the cust has seen on the internet, normally the internets not clever enough to fit it. But in saying that the cust only gets a price for the job, not broken down by materials and labour.

does the internet and it's users get on your nerves, customers get there prices on the internet and expect that price, as if you've got no overheads etc,.and what gets me is i priced a instant water heater from the manufacturers,£265,i had a look on the internet and there it was a £100 cheaper, i told the manufacturers and he said no chance ,i showed them the proof and basically said that alls not what it seems,i bought the one of the internet and every thing was fine, can you explain it.

I dont care anymore what people can get off the internet if they supply it and there are any issues regarding anything then i tell them i will charge for time upto them then .regarding the mark up on materials i was doing 10 % but was finding it to close so asked on here other day and found out most do 20 percent so will start crtanking it up , i had just over £2000 early in the year mark up on a job i done so i wouldnt worry about £400 mark up

If someone wants to pay internet prices for their boilers/spares they can get an internet gas engineer to fit them as far as I'm concerned. People who buy on price alone are customers that will haunt you, and to be honest Id rather not do business with them. They are one of the reasons this trade is being allowed to go down the gurney.
Bet they dont all buy Tesco baked beans either. If this was the case then everything would be "value" and there would be no "premium / high quality" products on the market.

also online there is sometimes different things included.

I had a Boiling water tap, customer said he found it £20 cheaper, I told him to show me where as the only one I had found online didnt include the filter, which was sold seperately at a cost of £40

soon went for the one I recommended

I agree, stuff on the et is normally crap. Wait in all day for it, iff it's damaged you get problems returning etc etc. I went to quote a job tonight and the customer handed me a leaflet from my local suppliers with her boiler choice circled. No trade or retail, so my labours exposed straight away. They take into consideration, van fuel advertising, etc etc.

How i long for the days when i charged list for everything but you have to cover your costs and your guarantee so add what you see fit.
I don't do work on a labour only or main components supplied unless it is some fancy bathroom i can't be rsed faffing about sorting out for them.

I charge 30%. I spend a lot of time and effort sourcing sanitary ware, furniture and all the things that a customer would like in their bathroom so it's only fair that I get paid for my efforts.

Cost of all materials plus 30%, plus daily rate x how long I think that I'll be working on the job = job quotation.
