Hi all,

I've just had a call from a contractor I do a lot of work for to ask if I'd change a G4 meter at a property to U16. There is a 1" barrel upstream & so I'm assuming that the mains pressure will be sufficient. As I've only put sub meters in before does anyone know what the procedure is regarding notifying the gas supplier about a change in meter & readings...is it even ok for me to do ( I have met1). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

You cant just swap a primary meter like that !

First thing is,the meter doesnt belong to the occupier. It belongs to the meter asset manager.

The Occupier needs to apply to their gas supplier for the upgrade and the swap will be done by the MAM.

Thanks for the reply Psst. Let me get this right though.. BES legally sell meters, you want to (for whatever reason) change your meter. The meter you currently have belongs to the gas supplier why can you not return that meter to the gas supplier & supply one that you have sourced yourself. As long as you record the old meter reading & supply them with the new details what is the issue?

You can't swap it and if you do you and the contractor will land in a shyt load of trouble.
The meters sold by bes and the like are for secondary meters or private supplies.

The other minor aspect to this is that if a connected load is increased then before the meter/supply is authorised for upgrade, the request is passed to the network to assess whether the local network can support the extra potential load . Meters are also available on Ebay, mostly stolen and neither Ebay or the Police are interested. Many kebab shops ,restaurants and takeaways are running on stolen gas.

Indeed..get all your meters from ebay and bypasses. There are even chaps on there who offer a fitting service for takeawys and restaurants...its wild west town..
