jacktrade

Last month had to replace taps on very very old bath, in a huge huge house..
Ower wanted to keep the relic, so I had to take out old taps and replace with retro similar type.
as you can imagine the nut on tap connector was older than black diamond, and unmoveable.....
Loaded nuts with wd40 etc, etc,,, but still tough and access was like black hole of calcutta, and the normal spanner routine *****d me off, especially the far tap..
So (eureka moment) ....got the spanner, cut it with steel hacksaw, just so it could fit in my fist...wrapper cloth round it,,,reached into far tap...got great leverage and undone with a bit of muscle....so godam easy...so now as long as I can get my hand behind taps, its off in seconds and easy..I`ve now got my mate to make a couple from strong steel and I am now unstoppable ( LOL).
I`ve called the tool "Jacks iron claw (JIC) "

i got so much torgue on it,i could have pulled the bath off the floor.

Ower was amazed, as she said the previous plumber didnt return after he gave her an estimate, and she agreed....I guess he saw the light before me, and was having nightmares of what might be ....
Necessity, and terror, is the best form of inventiveness...

blow torch normally does the trick

yep box spanner for me as well, saying that my monument duck foot will take out most things

"Times they are a changing" 😱

Well done jack!

While you were doing that I was working on another bath miles away changing some single bath taps put on a few years ago, body seat damaged, bit fell off ,so dripping badly, can't beat a bit of quality 🙄

Removed bath panel,ball.a.fix valves off...no weep or drip !
Plastic push fit with push fit tap connectors,no spanner on tools required, undid both nuts with hand and a cloth,,held tap backing nut and twisted tap loose, replaced taps tightening by hand, once tight, twisted into position to tighten, connect plastic push fitting to tap ,tighten with cloth,ball.a.fix on,no drip or weep 😱

Sorted,5 mins 😎

Used to take me longer to get a good grip on one nut😱

Done on a price too.......nice 🙂

Now just have to wait and see want starts dripping first ,new taps or push fit plastic 🙁

No doubt next ones will be like yours,to bring me back to reality 🙁

But until then...........'Oh happy days'

Well boys, i have now experienced the "ultimate solution" for me.
I can now get my hand on the trigger, so I`m off to all those rich people in listed buildings and Louis 13th ? baths....I wont even leave any DNA on the jop....(pmsl)

I don't understand. How does having no handle on the spanner improve the leverage? I imagine it's better than using your bare hand, yes. I won't knock it until I've tried it though. Although hacksawing through your adjustables probably takes some f'ing and blinding too doesn't it?

The whole gist of the event is too be able to get easy access and torgue on those prehistoric tap connections...just like putting your hand in and turning it and doing it like the terminator.
I now have got a toolmaker to make me an exact spanner that fits tight and snug in my hand.
Believe me, once you have the space to easily apply the pressure, it makes life so much easier. My (JIC) is now a permanent addition, and I aint never leaving home without it..😀😀
