Heating System Noise: https://youtu.be/u_eXwAUi3I0

Hi there, I have an issue where the hot water system make a massive sound when hot water is run from a tap after a period of inactivity I.e first thing in the morning or just in from work.

This first happened last year after a plumber recharged the red expansion vessel because the system was dripping which was visible through the tundish and outlet outside. That plumber then went AWOL. A second plumber could not identify the problem.

The issue seemed to fix itself but then earlier this year I noticed the dripping was back. The charge on the red expansion vessel was ok. Whilst trying to figure out the issue it was apparent the white expansion vessel has no pressure and could not be recharged. I had a third plumber replace that. The dripping continued. Subsequently he replaced two pressure valves. The dripping is again sorted however the noise is back and the plumber doesn't know what it could be. The link at the top is a recording of this noise. Any advice will be greatly received.

Thanks

could be a pipe vibrating against a joist or expanding in a hole drilled through a joist, given that it only happens sometimes could be due swelling and contracting of timber under different humidities.

You need to get a G3 certified person to work on invented cylinders... It should be a relatively simple fix... The red vessel is related to the heating, so the plumber who was touching that did not have a clue what he was doing!

This can be a popular noise on an unvented, a experienced g3 guy should have the knowledge to sort it. A plumber certainly wont. Post your location and I am sure somebody on here could help.

Thanks for the suggestions. At REDSAW I tried broaching the subject to my wife. I'm now in the spare bedroom and the noise continues ;-)

I'm in Portishead if there is anyone who fits the "experienced g3 guy" tag?

Noise like an Elephant/Brass Instrument!

relax, its just the wife sleeping!!!!

Or more to the point - exuding the build up of gastric gasses...

Does the noise happen when a particular tap is used or does it happen when any hot water tap is used?
It could be the cold feed tap into the cylinder that is causing the problem

Fair one oz-plumber!

It happens with any tap (including the shower). Having experimented some more if the hot water tap is run at 50% or so the noise doesn't happen.

My guess would be that it would be the cold water inlet valve to the cylinder.

Depending on the pressure of the cold mains and the increased pressure of the heated water in the cylinder, the valve may be struggling to open properly when you only have a small amount of water released through the hot taps.

I would see about getting the cold inlet valve replaced

That would be a third valve replaced!! I bought a new house so I didn't have to do this kind of thing. #TheyDontMakeThemLikeTheyUsedTo 🙂

I still reckon expansion vessel pressure... It only makes the noise after inactivity for awhile because the system has been heated uo from the boiler, the pressure has risen in the system & it makes that sound as the excess pressure is released!

You said you had the pressure reducing valves changed.

Does the water inlet valve come incorporated with a pressure reducing valve?

Is the water inlet valve also a stop tap?
Is the stop tap a normal tap washer type or a spring type?

There must be a non- return valve on the inlet somewhere and if it's a spring check valve, I would change that.

Hope that's as clear as mud
