Notching and drilling joists

Does anyone find notching joists a complete pain and are there any products out there that are an alternative or any other ways of hiding pipework?

No way around it unless you want to run all pipework on the surface!

A cordless circular saw,a Fein Multimaster and good quality spade bits will make it easier.

always put the nail under the pipe as they can drop out with age and heat the other way

Long time since I have been on here...
When I asked the question, I was thinking more of how you secure a pipe in a notched joist or a joist which you have drilled. I know a saddle clip can be used in a notch but obviously you need to make the notch big enough to accomodate the clip. How would you do it if the notch had to be narrow or if a pipe was passing through a hole made in the joist?

I use a bit of hairy felt to stop the pipe rubbing and rely on gravity in holes. In the past I've seen clips designed specifically for securing pipes in notches. An alternative is a clip fixed to a bit of batten secured to the side of the joist.

I have these for drilling joists with a 240v angled head drill, these wont work with a battery drill.....well, not any that I've tried.

its not drilling the hole i am on about, it is securing pipework in place

if you hate it so much why not ask a joiner for a price for lifting boards up and notching if you do him a kindof spec/plan . suppose it could work ok if you had a big heating job to do, or ask a some sort of labourer / hadyman to do it. you never know, times ar hard, work slow for some and its just before christmas, some might be willing to do it. i have done this with chasing pipes in floors ect before. Plumber price per hour is a fair bit more than a loubourer, so you better off going to do something else whilst he is at it, as often he can do it quicker anyway!

i use this with my Milwaukee 18v kit.

As Gray says what is this bit of kit going to achieve? I usually use a hole saw or spade bit then cut the "corners"! off so end up with this products profile anyway.

Don't pay, get an apprentice! He can drill / cut in any direction and even works when wet. / knee deep in water. Clips when through holes ( 25mm hole speed fit 22 with 15 through it and saddle clips screwed through side of clip into joist. But only sparkies drill joists, not vey easy to feed a length of copper through joist?
