Finished a combi conversion today. Got paid up by the developer, going back to comission next week. The client left earlier in the day leaving us to lock up. Electrician came in and wired the boiler and left.

At end of the day i notice that electrician has for some bizzare reason drilled a hole in top of boiler case to feed earthing cable through the boiler and out gromit at bottom to bond pipework. I rang him not impressed. Said he is going to have to pay for a new boiler etc. He gave me some sob story about his rising debt and insurance has run out blah blah. Begging me to put a metal plate over the hole he has drilled and sign it off.

Tbh i am not prepared to do this and will not comission the boiler in its current state. I am going to ring glowworm tomorrow before ringing the client to let them know the situation.

Question is: could this be repaired or would you insist it has to be a new boiler?

cheers in advance for advice.

Jesus thought I had worked with some bad sparks........

I would say is it possible to do a repair on it practically speaking, but I wouldn't even be entertaining it, as it will be classed as modifying a gas appliance, and it won't be the Sparks the next engineer will be Riddoring......

I expect the manufacturer would say the same.

Agree with Aqua, repairable probably, would I NO. End of the day, if boiler needs a warranty call, will the manufacturer accept the bodge?. There is your answer

Cheers guys.

Yeah I thought as much. Non manufacturer repair will void the warranty. Yeah the blokes a tit. Literally saw it and we were banging our heads against the wall. Typical because our usual electrician is in Thailand for new year so used this chap as a stand in, never again...

If I came across it on a service would defo shut off and riddor and since it wont be me servicing it in a years time not going to take the chance.

Thanks again

Unless - you send a photo to the manufacturer, and get an email saying they'd accept a repair with X or Y method. Print and attach to the benchmark (if they agree it, obviously)

If you're feeling kind, that is.

talk to manufacturer and ask for a written response as to whether repair acceptable or new case needed. Inform developer, customer and electrician of answer in writing. then take it from there

Think we all know what the manufacturers response will be. What an absolute moron. Shouldn't be working without insurance either. Begs the question has he done it before

Just got off the phone to glowworm technical. Absolutely no chance of repair. Needs a new boiler. Expensive mistake for mr electrical...

Many thanks for input. Best wishes for new year

I will be intrigued to know what the electrician says Will you keep us updated on your progress

What on 'earth' was he thinking! Surely that would of taken longer than running down the side.

Just no logic to it is there, it's either his first boiler or he's done this to a number before and this is the first time its been noticed

Took over a commercial boiler (GB162) where the sparkies had drilled a case for cabling. Punter weren't best pleased when I capped it.

Ended up patching it because it was too long installed like it.

Haha. The funny thing is the whole lot is being boxed in a unit so running down the side wouldn't of been an issue! Gas was bonded by meter so i literally have no idea what the point of bonding under the boiler was?!

To update he has had to order new boiler plus pay me to swap them next week. Silly boy

I agree with everyone's opinion totally but what makes me laugh is these boilers are no where near airtight. Internal water leaks make there way out pretty quickly. Given there negative pressure combustion chambers no one is that fussed so what harm would some high temp silicone do on the inside and some on the outside where the cable goes through? As it should be checked annually it can be monitored and re applied as necessary. In my eyes that would be ok but what if it never gets serviced? Probably nothing at all!

Yes it may not be air/ water tight but it's built to the manufacturers spec and anything out with that is deemed inappropriate. If that's the argument about it being negative pressure why have a case?

put a screw in it, or dob- weld it!
how did he do that without entering the ***bustion chamber anyhow?

Sod that if I'd break it up for parts...take it to a local body shop, they can weld up the hole and respray it.

At least you'll have a van full of brand new spare parts now!

Last I heard the sparks is stripping it down and putting it all on ebay. Try to recooperate some of his loss.

Honestly do not know what was going through his head. I have never heard of someone doing this before!

just cap it and walk off wouldn't even bother with phoning the manufacturer.

Back in the developers hands then isn't it with what he wants to do .
