Plumbing Material Costs

View the thread, titled "Plumbing Material Costs" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

I dont know how bad it was but apparently the wastes had incorrect falls, shower tray was angled the wrong way. First guy had used plastic flexible pipes not copper and didnt use isolating valves. I have a sense that some work was created as it was a day rate, as for the materials.....

And get this, he said to me a guy that will steal a pound off you will steal a thousand.....time to get my door key back

No Im not. I've got a bath that cant be positioned as the taps have been placed in the wrong place and tiled over. So the bath has to have one of the straps underneath butchered and a steel support put in so the bath can be fitted. Its either that or remove floor tiles to redo taps - the plumbers set the plumbing and Ok'd the tiler to lay, their balls up which they have admitted. The toilet is leaking and in the space of 2 days the entire work for 2 guys consisted of fitting a cistern and setting a floor mounted tap into the floor. Apparently there was alot of problem solving to do. Dont forget this is the 2nd time my bathroom has been ripped out and refitted in the last 4 months

There is absolutely nothing wrong with plastic pipes, isolating valves, ball-o-fixes, would not be something i would use myself as they can restrict flow on vented systems and usually need changed if they are isolated after a while. My advice would be to go to the local plumbers merchants or a well established company and get an independent opinion should only cost you a call out and explain it to him.

I try and stick to heating because I dont feel there is much money in bathrooms.

Silly me.

Sorry to hear what youve ben through.

Thanks Twinhawk. I did have an independent bathroom company in to look at the original works before we restarted. There were issues with the wastes, tiling, positioning of trays, fit of shower, leaking toilet, etc. What they couldnt tell me was what the plumbing was doing underneath tiles but waste going uphill was a bit of a hint that we were probably on dodgy ground with the hidden works. I'm OK to pay for the labour to a point, not the last 2 days where jack sh*t happened, but the rest is OK. Its the £1200 materials bill thats pi8*ing me off and the screw ups with the taps and the bath. These guys have only been part paid so the power lies with us.I m not out to do them over but equally I wont be done. I just needed some help, as I'm not a plumber and wanted a reality check!

Shame isnt it? Ive lost all faith in trades, I am so sorry to say it but these guys knew we had had one round of works which had gone badly and were recommended by a good friend who uses them for building works. Who can you trust?!

sadly there is alot of tradesmen out there who let the rest of us down, I prefer to do price work so the price is agreed before work commences any problems with the price can be resolved before work starts so everyones happy

Yeah I have to fight against the rep created by plumbers like this (or worse) every day - no body seems to trust tradesmen anymore.

If I did the job it would have cost half what this guy is charging - and you wouldnt have any leaks or mishaps . . .

A leak is a fairly sure sign that the plumber isnt that experienced!

Why dont you get a third party in to check and itemise the materials that this guy has used. Hopefully that will shed some light on this. I cannot believe that the reciept you were given actually tallyed to £1200. It must be nearer 500!

Did you get referances before this guy started work? On big jobs it is essential.

I hope you can sort it out.

"I cannot believe that the reciept you were given actually tallyed to £1200. It must be nearer 500!"

The receipts are from a plumbing trade counter down the road, so the actual amount spent will be correct but as all of you have said the actual amount of material needed is probably around £400. We are going to the merchants today to ask them to go through the list with us so we can try and work out what would have been needed for our job. If we cant do it this way then we will pay £4-500. Game over. Interestingly, all the surplus copper pipe we found in our garage yesterday, loads of the stuff but strangely last night the plumbers decided to lift all their tools out of the garage and the piping has gone....

do you think they may have read this thread?

No, probably spent most of their time on creative accountancy forums and listing spare materials on flee bay

and making video's for 'who's tube'

😉😀
