Greetings all, and I wonder if you can help this amateur DIY plumber please? I've picked up most of my skills over the years by watching and asking of a qualified plumber, who is unfortunately no longer with us.

My approximately 20 year old NF30 has run pretty reliably for years, and has been checked as safe & satisfactory not that long ago. I'd noticed recently that there seemed to be quite a bit of kettling and short cycling, so I thought I'd flush the old Sentinel anti-corrosion and anti-kettling mix out and refill.

The colour of the water drained was startling - thick rust red-brown. The concentration of proofing should have been more than adequate for a smallish terrace house with 7 rads and 8mm tubing to them.

Anyway, I drained and flushed and refilled. Initially the indirect tank would not drain so I suspected a blockage. I finally cleared this, I think, and fired the system up. It ran for about 60 seconds then cut out. Tried various controller combinations and pump speed settings, but I couldn't convince myself the pump even had water in it.

Since then I've drained and refilled it about another 3 times. I even tried to back-fill it via the washing machine tap - big fail. 😀 The water does appear to be circulating, but very sluggishly - the rads do get a bit warm but the HW is not doing much. I still can't get any water out of the little screw-capped pipe to the side of the pump, which did used to produce a dribble in times gone by.

I've got a call out to a local plumber, who's number I got from our local C/H shop I've used for years, but if anyone has some bright ideas in the meantime I'd be grateful to hear.

My monies on either the Pump or blocked cold feed, could be both as the colour of the water is red rust, (pumping over)

Hi Alpha man.

Certainly the cold feed was blocked initially, I thought at the 90 degree bend 6' from the F&E outlet down to the pump. I cut it out to check, then ran a length of co-ax cable (any port in a storm) down to the next joint and gave it a very technical wiggle. There was finally a slurp and the water drained down.

I remade the pipe run with push-fit copper connectors, as there was no great heat or pressure issue. It refilled subsequently pretty happily - or so it would seem.

Water colour now pretty good, clear with a faint reddish taint.

Whoever built the house, didn't seem to believe in having any drops in his pipework - there's tantamount to none in the horizontal run in the ceiling above the boiler in the kitchen, across the width of the house, before it ascends to the airing cupboard tank and pump. Not a brilliant bit of design to my, admittedly amateur, mind.
