Here's a good example of being undercut.

New combi boiler 8 rads all pretty big ones 1000s & 1200s K2s. Existing system Linea 28 with 7 rads all 2400 long and 2000 long single panels. I know it's strange but thats what's there, must have been a job lot. One rad to be moved as well. So did the heat loss calcs and sizes are about right.

I went in at £3400 with VAT to supply a Ecotech 837 flue two extensions and a bend, condensate pump upgrade gas supply curent is 15mm running 5 meters after the cooker and fire off a 22. Probably 3 days for me and a second year apprentice. Loads of boards to lift and an awkward attic gas and condensate run.

I was undercut by £800 when I rang him to "discuss" the quote. Turns out the other quote is for a Procombi 29KW same rads no upgrade to gas (which is required for any combi).

I got the job but had to haggle a bit and only because the guy had been told about Vaillants from a work colleague and I had measured the rooms, took a pressure and flow test and asked if he was adding anymore water outles in the future. He told me he wants an additional shower.

But to the unsuspecting I would be dear and he'd have got a worse boiler than he took out.

Well that and the fact I always follow up quotes won lots of work by taking an interest afterwards. Afterall it takes time to do quotes etc. The big worry for me is when the VAT goes up we will find it really tough the fly by nights will love it.

It would have been worse if you were up against someone quoting to fit a BnQ special on a straight swap for under a grand cash 🙄 It happens all the time. Most people don't know any better and just see the bottom line and think you are ripping them off. As Redsaw said at least the punter had some sense to see what he was actually getting.

we have a retired handyman down the road I live/work who now charges £5 per hour for all plumbing work, heres hoping that he passes on soon to a better life, as its not worth quoting for simple jobs where he works now as someone always mentions to the custards that hes really good value.

just did a combi swap using ultracom cxi 2 and new gas run from meter and trvs 1600 with 5yr warranty
due old boiler only had 16.5mb at appliance 21.5 at meter so 5mb drop and co of 600ppm and rising
other guy quoted to keep existing gas supply??????even after reading my warning notice
hi plan was to plonk in a perorma and leave the supply as it was??
no wonder he was cheaper
