Hi all you experienced engineers out there, thought I would try a bit of buttering up first!!

I had a problem with a Potterton kingfisher CF180 today, just wondered if anyone has any ideas.

The boiler is an old cast iron boiler, permanent pilot Honeywell V4400C gas valve, as the rat thing on the telly says Simple's. Normally i would agree but!!

The symptoms are that when the boiler 'stat is satisfied and the main burner goes out it some times, i'd say one in eight times approx, it takes the pilot out.

I have tried everything I can think of, check burner pressure, gas rated the appliance, check that the pipe size is correct, checked the meter size is correct, check inlet of gas valve and surprise I found flakes of a mysterious black material that the transporters tell us doesn't exist. Cleaned everything out i.e. inlet isolation valve, gas meter, replaced pipework, pilot tube, injector and replaced the gas valve. No different, made sure the gas valve was correct and it is.

On its own and with main gas on the pilot is strong and well round the thermocouple, it is just as the main gas goes off the pilot seems to lift a little as if there is a strong draft across it or the pilot pressure suddenly goes up and the flame is lifting.

I have come to the end of my experience, any and all suggestions would be gratefully received.

Just to answer any questions before they are asked I am qualified on domestic and commercial with the correct competencies, which does make this all the more embarrassing!!

Many thanks in advance for your help

Kind regards

James

Hi Pete,

thanks for the response, two new valves and two new thermocouples still same issue. As you say the pilot picture is beautiful with main gas off or on but when main gas goes off then it goes ragged and unstable,

thanks again

james

Yep, got it up to a good stable flame with the thermocouple just glowing as it should be. To be honest also tried it at full hammer with the thermocouple glowing like Inuit's nose, made no difference,

thanks for the response

James

Oh Rats, just realised. I should have posted in the Gas Safe one.

Your, of course, absolutely right, I am rally sorry.

How do I correct this can I delete the thread?

Red as that thermocouple now!!

i had the same problem on a kingfisher other engineers advised the lady to power flush the system as the pilot would go out because the boiler was overheating which i had never heard off , i advised her to check the pilot assembly / thermocouplin etc and get the basics right first she hasn't got back to me yet

try to reduce the pilot pressure could be to much pressure when main burner shuts down causing pilot to lift and go out
