Calm down boys. We are more than happy to help and you will also get more help from some members then others. The question you asked here is border line on gas work. Which is why I asked. I wouldn’t comment but as you can see some would.

In other threads I've had meaningful, open and honest discourses with other members about my forthcoming boiler replacement.

Yes, I was very undecided about what to replace the existing boiler with. I've alternated between combi and the alternatives i.e. system versus open vent. And, yes, I've pondered on Ideal vs Baxi vs Intergas etc.

And yes, Riley has strongly recommended getting a couple of quotes rather than stick to using my GasSafe installer/service engineer mate (who I have known since 2005 or 6 as a friend as well as heating engineer and who lives just minutes awayfrom me). He has maintained and serviced my Classic Fanfare all that time and changed gas valve, fan, air pressure switch, sorted out the odd blockage and anything else I ask him to do.

Yes, I've been handy with tools over many years, since I was 18, keeping myself amused as well as earning a few shillings along the way (but not fitting boilers) but, bigrodders, why would I even think about fitting a boiler (or it's ancillaries) when I have a mate who will do it at sensible rates and who will not stitch me up and who knows what he's doing? Yes, he's happy if I get some of the bits. We understand each other. As mates do.

Anyway, I'm rambling. But do have to say I'm not over the moon about bigrodder's assertions in posts #16 and #19 and hope he might want to think about retracting them.

Why not ask your mate to give you some detail of all the basic parts needed?
That is normal where the customer is only supplying the gear and not installing.
If they are actually installing, then their plumber mate, or any other plumber normally won’t be helpful as it would be crystal clear who is actually attempting the work

Stan, I don’t think we would ever complain about somebody asking questions in order to do the right job or to get the best deal for them and their family. Where we draw the line is essentially guiding someone through an install. None of us have any problem with you using your mate as long as he is gas safe and holds a gas safe qualification in his own right not one from a company as the likelihood is he is not covered. You have to understand that we are understandably apprehensive, you must see it from our perspective you may not be going to do the work but the next person that reads the thread might think how hard is it and crack on thus negating our responsibility to safe working practices with gas. You must also understand that your questions have gone a bit beyond recommending a boiler and talking basic installation requirements. No offence intended but you have to see both sides of the coin here

I'll just make one more final assurance to yourself and to anyone else who sees it :-

I have decided on what I've decided on and that'll be a heat only, open vent 18kw boiler - be it Intergas or one of the other options. It won't be a Worcester and possibly not a Vaillant but that still leaves a handful of others. I was wrong to consider the combi option, but at least we've covered in and discounted it.

My mate is a self employed Gas Safe installer and maintenance man. He has, in the past, worked for a company as a service engineer doing servicing and breakdowns. As would be expected, he's done numerous courses over many years. Hopefully I've covered that point in full. Nothing more to be said.

Tell bigrodders when you next have contact, that he was mistaken in his beliefs that I'll fit it myself. That's that point covered too.
