I've fitted a fair few Smart Thermostats over the years without any real problems, so I thought this job would be a cinch- apparently not!
I have a Honeywell boiler with a digital control panel and a mechanical timer. There is no thermostat in the property (it's just a small holiday cottage) but all the radiators have TRVs. I was working on the assumption that a timer is just a thing that switches the heating on and off, just like a thermostat would do, but maybe I'm showing my ignorance here.
I removed the timer dial and found it had 3 connection wires. According to the label on the timer they are. GND, 24V, and CH1. I assumed that CH1 was the heating connection so I wired up the HIve with mains power and connected the wire to 'Heating On' (as per previous experience and the Nest wiring diagram). Everything looks like it's working, I can turn the heating on and off with the HIve thermostat and the lights on the Hive go on and off as expected, but it has absolutely no effect.
Interestingly, with the timer removed (and without the Hive wired up, and also with it wired up) the system starts the central heating when I plug the boiler in. Is this the expected behaviour on a system with no thermostat?
I have a feeling I may be doing something fundamentally dumb here. Any thoughts?
