ok so I have been round to John's tonight and setup his boiler temp and showed him how to use it properly. You see his Wife Hayley and kate daughter (6) turn the heating up via the boiler controls to warp factor 6-7 and not the room stat, this is no great big issue I know but john asked whether heating the house 24/7 is cheaper in the winter months and this is also somthing me and my Gill (accountant) have discussed at length.

I have concluded thus, it may be cheaper to heat a building to an ambient temperature as you are not payong to heat all your building fabric up "on demand" and the fabric of the building, not to mention all the junk inside as everything must warm up and heatsinks. So therfore im my honest opinion I think it is cheaper in the long run in those winter months, but has anyone any further pearls of wisdom or facts regarding this.

We live in a semi det 2up 3 down inc conny not a massive house but we do plan on moving but I already rent a few houses out and at this time I have to be carefull with the money incase tenants move out although we normally let them fast thank god!!

Depends entirely on the house tbh. My in laws house refuses to heat in less than 3 hours and if you turn the heat off its freezing almost instantly. My house heats in 20 mins and takes a long time to cool down so the heating comes on in bursts.

Thanks firstly, our house seems to cool quite fast but then I like the room cold when I am in bed but warmer in the living room, I am only thinking of running it on a low temp to keep "the fabric" warmer than if it is turned off in the day as we're at work and even if I am at home I will be situate in the office ( log cabin at bottom of garden. So maybe I will just try it and the "accountant" can do th sums on it eh??

Thanks

the house needs to be well insulated to benefit from heating being on 24/7 . the night setback is usually 16'c

Our house has been cavity wall'd although if I had a choice i'd rather it wasn't but thats another story I hate the stuff with a passion rightly or wrongly.....

So I should set room stat at 16'c when I go to bed ?

maybe Simon my GSR should install a new programmer as it is BG's finest we have with a detatchable room stat so I can monitor it easier??

will save you money, that's the recommended temp, but temp as we all know is a personal thing.
bet BG put trv on rad in room with stat

Ha ha NO amazingly on the landing upstairs no rad near apart from bathroom rad so good job there?!??!

Whether it will cost more or not will be down to the heat loss of the building or how much you put your trade skills to use.
Personally i open a window to let the heat out. No snow on my roof

No, cos the room will always be cold hence the roomstat will never be satisfied.

Far too hot in living room if anything but other areas are ok might just have to check if the trv is set to warp factor 6 also, I am not inn until 6-7pm mainly so Mrs could have meddled

Thanks for this so it needs moving? sorry only just starting Lvl 3 so not really up on it yet

Not necessarily, just work around it. Mine is in the hallway next to garage, and for it to function, I have it set at 16/17 degrees to make the house comfortable, then adjust trvs in every room to achieve the temps you want.

Even my fridge is warmer than 16 - 17. I need to keep my beer on the back step :smi8le:

I prefer not to reduce flow temp as it will take longer to reach temperature. Caveat emptor: unless the boiler stat is on max, in which case I would dial it back.

I live in a 3 storey house and foolishly the builder of the house put the stat in a non living area on the garage wall which is always cold, so it works as it should, just at the wrong temps, so for the living room to be 20 degrees, the stat has to be set at 16. The house is 94% efficient, so it heats up in no time, if the heating was on for more than 20 mins at a time, we'd melt.
