hey everyone,

Many thanks for any help, by the way!

I live in a 2 bedroom flat and a plumber installed a positive head shower pump around 15yrs ago. Since day 1, the pump has been quite noisy (80db) but thought that was completely normal.

I then rang salamander pumps to see what the level should be for my pump and he said to me that the noise i'm experiencing is not due to the pump but possibly air in the system and he was shocked it lasted more than 12 months, let alone 15yrs!

He also stated that i needed a negative head pump but this is where I'm confused.

My understanding is that if my cold water tank is more than 600mm above my showerhead i need a positive head pump and if it's less I'll need a negative head pump? My cold water tank is definitely over 600mm above my showerhead so why would i need a negative head pump? then again don't know if it's meant to be 600mm above where the showerhead connects or the actual showerhead. Obviously when i'm having a shower, the showerhead is probably level or slightly lower than the water tank.

Can anyone clarify this for me please?

Many thanks,
Sal

Yes you need a negative head pump, I suggest Stuart Turner Monsoon universal - and fit it according to manufacturer’s instructions, your pipework will need altering.
