Simple basin waste replacement?

Hi,
Clueless amateur here. The rod mechanism controlling the pop-up waste in my bathroom basin has somehow failed so that there is now no rod projecting into the waste pipe to move the 'plug thing' up and down. I've managed to remove the plug so am now left with an unprotected open pipe draining the basin. The basin is fixed to the wall and its underneath is inaccessible, so my question is... Is there some kind of plug that I can simply drop into the 'hole' without having to assemble anything? An old style plug with chain would presumably do, but there is nothing to fix the chain to. I've seen these clicker things, but I'm unsure if they can be fitted without accessing the rear/underneath of the basin.

Thanks for any advice.
Ian

If you want to renew the waste completely then you will have to have acces underneath I'm afraid, like you have said try using a plastic/rubber plug but make sure it has a Handal on it or the chain as when the basin is full of water getting the plug out can be a pain.
