For the past 6 months we've had problems with sulphur/eggy smells in our bedroom when the flat above us run their shower (or any appliance in their bathroom). Initially we thought this was a drainage issue because the waste pipe runs under our solid concrete floor in the bedroom. We've since exhausted every investigative method including multiple cctv surveys, smoke tests etc and found that the clay waste pipes are in good condition with no obvious cracks or signs of leaks. The smoke test showed no smoke in the bedroom and a good draw from the vent pipe.
The smell seems to come from the radiator in our bedroom, which is just above where the waste pipe runs. The upstairs flat have a Saniflow which pushes out pulses of water, and when these pulses go past the radiator it makes a sloshing noise (it sounds like its coming from inside it). Is it possible that we have a buildup of hydrogen sulphide in the radiator from corrosion and the sloshing noise is pushing the smell out of gaps in the radiator plumbing? The wall that the radiator is on was damp proofed (tanked) 6 months ago so there could have been some disruption caused by that. It was done just before we moved in. What would our best bet be in working out if its the radiator? Should I take it off the wall and see if the smell goes?
Thanks
Andy
