I was out looking at a job the customer wants a rad moved. Turns out he needs 2 rads repiped & a new shower room & all in solid floors in a fairly new posh flat.
I am not gas qualified, but first thing I was asked about was the combi gas boiler wasn't working. Quick look at the boiler showed no pressure on the gauge & a seperate expansion vessel fitted below it in a cupboard. Turns out they have had it serviced by a gas guy & he said the boiler vessel had been replaced to an external vessel by a previous engineer. He had apparently refilled the system to correct pressure but it had now dropped to zero.
I went to refill the boiler and first second I looked at it I realised why the customer wasn't able to do it. A isolating valve (cheap ballofix type) was fitted on the heating side & turned off! Expansion vessel & filling loop therefore not linked to system.
So the engineer who installed the new expansion vessel had obviously not been clever & isolated the vessel with a valve & the service guy came out, replaced & worked on the filling loop & refilled system by turning the valve on & off! I really should get my gas certificate, if that's the quality out there.

I just seem to find the bad! What I reckon happened is the isolating valve was originally there on boiler side of original filling loop, which is fine. First guy who fitted the expansion vessel externally made the stupid mistake of not removing the isolating valve, yet it now was on the pipe to exp vessel. Second guy came to service the boiler when the new people bought the flat and replaced filling loop, but filled the system & then turned the valve off!
I hope they know something about gas.
