Hi all, been helping out a guy who's put a solid fuel boiler in his kitchen and want's to link it to his oil boiler - found him a link up system but not being any great solid fuel expert (and I told him this) have found we need to change over to a gravity system and install a gravity F&E tank but found out this needs to be made of copper plus the ball valve and the overflow and the expansion pipe - no problem found a supplier who can do that. Now the question is -- does the rest of the heating system ie all the house rads/cylinder primaries have to have copper pipe too because at the moment there not (owner put his own system in hep20). My gut feeling and after looking at the link up layout it will have to be, as when the boiler is up to full heat and the heat leak in the loft can take no more the panel "dumps" the heat to the system 😱 A second opinion would really be appreciated from someone who knows more than I do about installing these types of boilers - can't get a reply from link manu as on holiday... ps. told the guy he should have got Hetas in to do it but it's too late he's already done it

Been told that by the time the boiler dissapates the heat up the pipes and with a 27000btu output the customer would be lucky to heat his rads to luke warm (boiler manu) I know we need copper on the back of the boiler but still concerned - still have my doubts
 
Hi Furry. I am sure i am not the only one who recognise punters like this. They think they have invented perpetual motion. And want to save money, but to achieve there dreams a good deal of design and materials will need to be purchased. The indirect cylinder may require two coils (some on the coils/heat exchangers are not suited to gravity circulation) The primary F&R would be 28 mm as a minimum, the vertical height between boiler and cylinder is important (the greater the better) the horizontal distance between boiler and cylinder should be minimal. (directly above) Towel rails/ rads dedicated to the system are a better option, but owing to the gravity circulation required the pipe work to these must be 22mm, perhaps the last 300 mm in 15 mm and these towel/rads need to be well above boiler level. The pricipal of gravity circulation being the mass/wieght difference water in the hot flow pipe and cooler return, This causes the circulation which is very small. Measured in Mb or mm, because you are only dealing with say 3 mm pressure to cause the water to move, frictional resistance of pipe and fittings are a big factor as to whether or not it works. Coupled with the dangers associated with boiling water suggests you should give it a miss. Good Luck
 
It's being connected to a Heating inovations H2 panel which is pumped but goes to gravity when the powers down - if that clarifies it a bit better

I am intending to use one and wondered what your experience of it was?
