I've just bought some solvent weld pipe and connectors and was wondering how far the pipe has to go into the connector. As this is my first attempt at solvent welding I want to get it right. The pipe has been cut with a Rothenberger plasticut tool so the pipe end is burr free.

My pipe is 21.5mm overflow and the connector has a ridge 25mm inside which I assume the pipe has to butt up to but when I push the pipe in it only goes in as far as 22mm. The joint is quite tight as a dry fit, will this loosen up when I apply the glue?

Thanks in advance
Trigger

its simple, clean pipe needed, thin layer on both pipe and fitting, push together and twist abit. Give it 30 seconds done. try to avoid dry fitting especially on bigger pipework like 110mm as sometimes it wont want to come back off.

Wotcha Dave

The pipe doesn't have to go all the way in (oo matron)

I've cut it short a few times and as long as it's pushed in about 5mm (on 1.25" and 1.5" pipe) it's ok, so that should be fine with your 0.75" overflow pipe

The surface of plastic pipe is greasy the cleaner removes the grease. Apply weld on the pipe only, if it is on the fitting it gets pushed into the pipe. Insert and twist pipe slightly as your pushing it in to distribute the solvent weld around the fitting. Wipe off excess solvent weld. Watch some solvent weld glue, I was installing a 100mm main about 1/4 mile long and had nearly finished when I read the tin it said "Do not smoke while using solvent weld it can turn to acid in the mouth" Oh! Great I smoked like a dustbin on fire and had been doing so since I started laying the main. I was okay though I think, the wife says if it did effect you nobody would know your a bit odd anyway!!!! Moral: Read the COSSH info before you start not after.

all manufacturers say to glue both pipe and fitting bernie this is an autogenus welding procedure which requires both surfaces to melt to allow fusion to occur they only need a thin film to achieve this

Glue reminds me of my mate a wood beautician (joiner) he loved Thix-o-fix contact adhesive and would try and bags all the jobs that used it. He went tripping on the stuff, if you went on his jobs the smell of it nearly knocked you out.
