Morning chaps sitting here watching the early morning news this cronavirus business is really getting a hold now , two families I know have had holiday's cancelled to Spain, this is going to effect us all personally and business wise I am lucky enough to have a shower upgrade a weeks work for a retired couple who are happy to have me in their home , then a full gas central heating job in a empty property to do so won't effect my work situation for the next 3 weeks or so. I have a elderly mother with asthma who lives alone who I am obviously conserved about she lives a 2 hour drive away and getting her to stay in will drive her stir crazy I am seriously considering bring her to stay with us for a month or so, how are you all coping with the problem ? Supermarket shelves are being stripped of basic essentials and I can see this getting worse your opinions please gentlemen. Keep well regards kop

3 of my old farts who used to do medi gas have been contacted by our old sub contractor to see if they would go and put some streets in. Now they want me to factor the work like I used to do...
ie pay them and wait to get paid...It was a yes as Gordon the Moron who used to run the outfit in Brum has long gone and the new fella is offering way less than 100 days ...they do oxygen and vac all brazed with a nitrogen flood to blow any crap out. It appears there out of date certificates do not matter so it might be men in transits all over again ...my Mrs will go ballistic we used to disappear for 12 14 days

Hi Rob, @centralheatking could I get into this type of work? What qualifications/certificates are required?
Cheers Jim

I will ask what are/we’re their certs and training ..watch out tho it was for us bank holidays xmas etc and they worked on a set hours contract for each job which I used to argue with Gordon the Moron about before we turned up and sometimes when we arrived and had to threaten to drive away unless we got more. The work was dead easy really, and I only got paid after the medical pharmacist passed the street often a week or many later

Are we classed as Key Workers? (Plumbers/Heating Engineers) Getting conflicting messages...
Here's the list for whether you are 'key' enough for a school to look after your kids:

Plumbing and heating engineers per se aren't on it. It's possible that a small number might qualify because they are necessary to keep essential services running but that'll be the exception rather than the rule.

There may be other lists but I'm not aware of them.

It matters not, I cannot see a policeman or soldier restricting our activities attending call outs.
As long as the truck is sign written and or we have papers these boys will let us go by.
It will be the same approach as in Northern Ireland when there were checkpoints. I know a bit I was
There around and about centralheatking

Think an 18 year old with underlined health condition has been the youngest in the uk. Joe Rogan has a specialist on his podcast and he seemed to think it will be 15 times worst than a bad flu season with 250,000 plus deaths worldwide. He said data was showing over 40's and the percentage goes up quite alot.

Im now in self isolation, I have my mother living with me and she is nearly 80 and has stage 4 lung cancer. I can't risk bringing it back to her as I don't think she would survive it. I started Friday and I'm already bored, be out of bread and milk in 2-3 days.

I've already done 1 job from home, I soldered up some pipework tails for a customer for them to change there own sink taps. Worked a treat.

Be save everybody, take it seriously and protect your family.

And the hhic says exactly the opposite.
What’s hhic please

You might be too late but I booked online shopping and that’s worked in the last two weeks
Your problem is coming back if she is at your home if you can’t keep 2 metres from everyone.
My daughter returned home after catching it at school and my wife is in the added risk group.
We all have it but so far it has been mild and if we get through it we should be immune for the rest of the year.
It’s tough but we are using social media to keep in touch - expect letter stating stay in for 3 months any day noe

Now watching Boris on TV he's brought in even more restrictions people just didn't take it seriously enough over the weekend we are heading for full lockdown by the look of it , I spoke to my mother tonight and she not coping very well and it's only a few days in really don't know what to do for the best ? Kop

Well, that's good. So the UK is now where we (Italy) were on the 11th as far as restrictions go (though it's less clear how the authorities are going to police things), but the UK has half the official cases Italy had back then.

Which hopefully means the UK should be able to manage things better than Italy has been able to, due to taking action relatively sooner.

Hoorah!

PS Italy has put plumbers down as an essential service and plumbers can continue to go to work. In practice, most people are scared and won't want plumbers in their houses for non-essential work.

The key wording seemed to be "You can travel to and from work only if you can't work from home"

Now obviously we can't work from home and nor can most trades.

However if the merchants close because they are a "non essential business" then the materials will dry up... so the building sites may close....?

I was trying to find the figures on how long the virus lasts on surfaces, the best I could find was...

4hrs on copper
24hrs on card
48hr on stainless steel
72hrs on plastic

albeit the amount of active virus remaining after 72hrs is miniscule (0.1%), still if you can arrange some of your work accordingly it may helpful.

I understand it’s all regulated by BOC no surprise there, but for experienced fellas it is a bit of a tick box exercise and a practical remember. It’s not soldering but brazing but with good quality medical quality fittings all individually wrapped but essentially the same stuff but really expensive. And health service standards apply to all the work. We did alright out of it Centralheatking

Yep same here, last job today then that’s me done til who-knows-when. I’ve told all the landlords I won’t be doing gas safety checks for a bit but will still go out to emergency stuff. Testing times ahead now, hope it doesn’t last too long or I’ll be proper skint.

“it’s all right for you mate, you’re self employed you can do what you want” my pal used to say that to me all the time!!... Hmmmm!!

Stay safe lads 👍🏻

I would not allow a gas inspection to become out of date if it was my tenants. I just know should the worse happen I would still end up in the dock.

On a separate note, can’t see why construction guys working way up high in the fresh air can’t continue. P Morgan sat at very close quarters talking s***

They are currently being delayed not cancelled. Gas safe are still waiting for an answer on Landlord checks from the HSE. But I think that it is correct they are delayed for now.

One of the issues which I hope will be looked at after things get back to normal. Is the total lack of cash reserves by really quite large companies ...they cry wolf after 3 days and yet pay their investors dividends. Also it might be a heads up to everbody to try and look a bit beyond their next pay check and just save a little for a rainy day instead of expensive coffee to go and £40 per month phones

I wish my phone was £40.00 a month.
I thought there are flat rate use as much as you can deals. I have a couple of phones and a landline but use email via WiFi at home and anywhere I can get it...even follow buses if it’s a bigger package and wait while they stop. I don’t think we spend £40 per month total inc BT. Don’t buy expensive coffee at £3.oo a tub and always take my own sandwiches unless invited out to Lunch

Perhaps the reason for the high cost is buying the phone on a contract and getting the data you may need for eg IOMs when needing information on the go? Though I own my own (non-smart) phone and pay £6 a month myself, I appreciate this isn't for everyone.

Why is it that the individual needs money for a rainy day but when banks or large companies struggle they come cap in hand to the taxpayer? Remember the billions that went to the banks 2010? One thing I'm glad to see in this crisis is money actually going to the people that need it and from a tory government! Wonders never cease 😛

Banks and big business will be getting their cut first, don't you worry...
Just look at all the money held in solicitors client accounts because nobody can buy or sell houses but they will earn interest on that money. Then there are large companies who have paid massive dividends out recently but now need government .help to carry on. Example Rick Stein with places everywhere charging the earth now closed down is not paying his staff anything...this all sucks and I am not a socialist but self employed but with some resources only because I am old....I hope the fall out from this crisis changes everbodies outlook for ever after it’s moved on

We will think about your family and yes a bit more put into the NHs is obviously a foregone conclusion after all this and all due respect must be given to the forgotten but vital workers in society whom we now really value.

If it hasn't been mentioned car and van MOT's have been exempted for 6 months, my tester told me after handing me my fail certificate with a bundle of work to have done a couple of weeks back grrrr.

Got furloughed for three weeks (all those outstanding jobs at home got done!!! -well, mostly 🙂 ) now been back at work for a month: despite the lockdown we've still got tons of enquiries coming in, the estimators ae working from home trying to look after their kids and turn out a zillion tenders at the same time. Load more of our fitters are coming back as sites reopen, however still got most of the office staff either furloughed or working from home.

It’s a load of bollocks in my opinion. I have a elderly relative who’s 95, she’s big into the church community and seems to know thousands of old folks....she’s regularly at funerals pre and post covid, strange how she’s not mentioned one Covid related death.

There are people on this thread who have relatives who have Covid.

I’m not surprised...seems like since they started testing everyone, loads of people already have it and don’t even have any symptoms.

That is certainly true but it has still killed alot of vulnerable folks and your elderly relative who is a magnificent age may just be fortunate or not mentioned the fact that their deaths were Covid related. Besides the fact that she can't attend church or funeral during lockdown (limited attendance at least) respectfully she has probably outlived the majority of her friends anyway and well before the arrival of Covid.

You know old woman are on the phone right? Constantly gossiping!

It just seems now all kids are back at school, BM bargains and Lidl is like Black Friday every day....Covid is out there and done it’s worsts.

I really do feel for those folk who hang off the governments every word. Anyway you make your point very well & cheers

Careful what you say Jim there are people on here who had family and friends who have died from covid the first lock down we as a family avoided it completely, but this second time we have had ten members of our extended family who have had it tested and diagnosed luckily they have all recovered, but this is not over by along way and sadly more innocent people will loose there lives before their time, 40 elderly people have contracted covid in a care home in Gorleston brought in a staff member who is now very unwell herself she is only in her late thirties, four of the staff members regularly visit Gregg's for coffees and food stuff where my wife works so obviously this is a worry. Keep well all kop

She may not have heard of or understands Covid.
She is a lucky one, pure luck or genetic luck that she is fit and well.
There are plenty of people dying 25 - 30 years younger than her.

You can, but really shouldn't use her for / as an example whether the Covid Virus exists.

My old man who smoked since he was 12 and died just over 20 years ago always used to say to his nagging kids that we shouldn't worry because he knew someone who had a 60 a day habit and lived to be 98. Unfortunately he wasn't one of those and died about 40 yrs short after coughing his lungs up into my lap and dying in my arms. He didn't die of Covid but he did die of a preventable disease and Covid is preventable if the necessary precautions are taken but there are always exceptions, always outliers.

I've just tested positive for COVID, gutted especially as I bought my elderly ma home this past year to keep her safe.

I've been utterly paranoid too, a third of the van is full of masks, shields, wipes, gels and sprays so take extra care out there.

Keep well. If it's any reassurance, a lady down the road, who is 100, has recently had flu or CovID-like symptoms and been poorly. She had a Covid test but something went wrong and they need to repeat the test. In any case, her son says she seems to be recovering.

Tbh mate now I can assess with calm head I was well past the worst of it as my stats showed the hospital...as they were struggling to find a reason to admit me but my BP was off the charts so they wanted to keep in for observation and treat me for Coronvirus pneumonia by default. So not not as serious as I made it sound initially plus I was a bit desperate to get out of the house as we have a mix of positives and neg covids and the stress had escalated. Three days out to recover, reaccess and plan was most welcome although I felt a wee bit guilty of taking a bed.

Started this thread in march 2020 and alot of us have been affected family members falling ill with the virus some even loosing loved ones ❤️ , my own brother was hospitalised only this week he has covid phumonia and is very unwell 🤞 he gets well soon , my mother's mental health has suffered terribly and she's with us again and has been for two weeks each time I bring her to stay she's gone down hill its heart breaking to see I have talked to her doctor on the phone and she has a appointment in the new year for a full mot but I fear she will not be able to take care of herself much longer which will be challenging, these restrictions brought in to help guard against the new more infectious variant make it difficult aswell I have a new little granddaughter I haven't been able to see yet because their in a higher tier saying that we are now all in tier 4 😠, I would like to say there's light at the end of the tunnel but I think there's some tough times ahead for us all. Stay well keeps safe keep your loved one close and pray we all come out the other side. Regards kop

I think things will get tougher before it improves. Wifes uncle, although it was heart failure, has been written up as covid pneumonia and no funeral until January 11th.
The new variant is 16 miles up the road, according to the news last night.
On the plus side the wife can give her mother a cuddle in the nursing home now they have the rapid testing up an running.

Stay as safe as you can and maybe enjoy a bit of downtime.

Just wanna add some practical advice regarding Covid/any virus. I’m a big believer in building a strong immune system through a healthy diet and regular exercise. This means dragging yourself outta bed and hitting the road for 5 miles or dare I say it, saying no to that bacon roll on occasion! Do this three times a week and have a better chance at beating Covid. Let’s face it...who can afford to keep self isolated when every man and his dog has a separate rule...certain industries being discriminated against. Goal post moving every day, I know old folks on my street who ain’t been out the house since March bless um...probably sat at home terrified watching BBC news. I ain’t taking the vaccine, neither are my parents, this is just our family beliefs.

All well and good, and agree a healthy immune system is always a good thing to have, and agree we cannot all self-isolate totally when the rules aren't always logical. That said, we can avoid un-necessary contact and putting ourselves and others at increased risk.

That said, this virus does not always appear to affect the people you would expect most, though obviously there is some correlation. To give examples, I know an over-85-year old who recently caught Covid and has been almost asymptomatic. His wife appears to be immune despite living in a household of infected people and having various chronic issues. His sons in their 40s are unwell but at home.

By contrast, two people I know in their 70s and in rugged good health (both still working on a self-employed basis in manual trades) have died from Covid in the last week. One had a brother whose general health and fitness are generally worse but, contrary to what you would expect, the brother suffered no worse than from a mild flu.

I WILL be taking the vaccine as soon as it is available because my personal belief is that the vaccine may help keep me out of hospital and keep a bed free for others and because I'm hoping the vaccine will make it likely that I will not then pass the disease on to others.

Quick update on my situation my brother is one of the unfortunate ones its looking like he has the longer version of covid and is still unwell after 14 days , mums mental health has not improved at all this time and I have now had to bring her back home and try and get some medical help this I'd proving difficult but I have a appointment on the 4th of January so I will need to stay with her in the short term not a great start to a new year . Take care of your mum as mental problems could cause physical deterioration. Try to get specialist mental health people to diagnose your mum if she doesn’t improve, so it can quickly be treated.
Keep us informed of progress.

How exactly is your mum affected?
Severe depression can give the appearance of other illnesses and often needs medical intervention.
PM me if you want.

Hello Kop, does your Mum suffer from a form of dementia or are we talking a form of full blown depression would you say? Yes, just disconnect the gas cooker completely...my ma was leaving the gas on after trying to cook. Lucky I was passing but the non stick was destroyed, any support from your LA, as mine is over 80 she was entitled to free Telecareline where she wears an alarm pendant, smoke and CO2 connected too. Also bear this in mind if she appears more confused than usual, if she hasn't taken care of her personal hygene very well of late for whatever reason then she may have a UTI and than makes them appear very confused indeed. My ma left hospital with a UTI as she wore a catheter and we didn't diagnose for six weeks after. Fecking nightmare as she was all over the place.

Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include a sudden need to pee and pain or a burning sensation when peeing.

Symptoms of a UTI include:
needing to pee suddenly or more often than usual
pain or a burning sensation when peeing
smelly or cloudy pee
blood in your pee
pain in your lower tummy
feeling tired and unwell
in older people, changes in behaviour such as severe confusion or agitation

Hello Kop, does your Mum suffer from a form of dementia or are we talking a form of full blown depression would you say? Yes, just disconnect the gas cooker completely...my ma was leaving the gas on after trying to cook. Sound like a nightmare mate ❤️ I think it's a form of dementia if I'm honest it's in her family my Nan suffered with it her brother and sister also, it's a long story but she's had it tough for along time and what with covid and lockdowns and constant media bombardment, loss of social interaction loneliness lead to her loosing her confidence and getting very forgetful she a old lady who needs some TLC right now, I just hope she can be helped to be able to be independent as long as possible she hates being a burden . Regards kop

If she's not already taking vitamin D3 supplements, give them a try. I'm very skeptical about 'dietary supplements' in general but this one is an exception. They're cheap, safe and the science backing them up is good. I started giving them to my father a few months ago and we saw a significant improvement within about a week.

Only read the first post by the way but we had to cancel a trip to DisneyLand Paris last April with a new date of August 2021. The missus was supposed to celebrate her birthday in NY [these last few days] but these trips obviously didn't happen. The missus actually spent a few months training to be an independant travel agent over the summer and is now fully approved with the likes of TUI etc and the relevant insurance bodies. Up side is we can now get holidays for next to nothing and make good commission (or 0% for friends) and she still has her regular job but the down side is... well, you know... COVI...

Improvement in what Chuck?

You should be able to get Adcal on prescription comes in dissolvable or chewable form although the later is quite a lot to swallow tbh.

Wifes mother is supposed to have dementia, shes 93. If the doctors are to be believed shes had it over 10 years, which would make her one of the longest surviving sufferers. She hasnt got dementia, shes just old. Had a spate of water infections over the years which sent her, well quite frankly doolally. I think doctors are a bit quick to use dementia as a diagnosis.
Hope you can find a way forward kop.

Over the past year or so he'd gradually become lethargic and withdrawn. After starting vitamin D3 he seemed to gain energy and strength and his level of alertness improved and seemed to start enjoying the company of others again.

I tried it because I remembered my grandfather, who was a geriatrician, talking to my mother in the 1970s and saying that almost all his patients seemed to benefit from extra vitamin D. My father has difficulty swallowing so I got a version for vegans that comes as a bottle of liquid with a dropper. I won't advertise the name here but it was recommended by my local pharmacy. PM me if you want to know the brand.

This is getting a bit of a struggle my brother has had to go back into hospital he's not making progress after testing positive for covid on the 6th of December this is the second time he's gone in I have spoken to him tonight and he's comfortable but they are worried he may have a blood clot? he's struggling to breath, my Mum's sister has tested positive for covid and she's had breast cancer treatment last year got it from her son on Christmas Day who's in her bubble and tested positive a day or so after she collapsed yesterday and had a night in hospital but is home now resting. Mums been a bit more relaxed today I left her all morning to sort herself out and did a few errands and then changed her thermostat in the hallway, a eye test booked for tomorrow and the dentist on Thursday but you have to push to get em. Regards kop

That’s a lot of rotten luck , I feel for you. And as is often the way in families the burden of sorting stuff out falls mostly on one person- take care of yourself too or you’ll be no good to anyone! Hope there’s an improvement soon 🤞

Well...locked down again and us critical workers out grafting with little thanks. So yeh...yeh I’ll clap if they want, but this time I’m clapping for Gas Engineers selflessly out here busting a gut, day in day out.
