Hi guys, I've skipped over the fence from the sparks forum to get a bit of advice. Hello all by the way, first post on here but I think i would get a better answer from the guys in the know.

Situation is I am doing a bathroom simple stuff, new light fan and shower, However I have noticed the bathroom has a linen cupboard which houses a multipoint boiler. Not a major problem electrically but it occured to me that this boiler which is not a sealed type (sorry did not get the make/model) is old and relies on a air vent next to it to outside and has air vents top and bottom of the cupboard door for its safe operation, that bit I understand. Now I would be installing an extract fan in this room which will no doubt have the door shut making a negative air preasure in the room and air wanting to take the easiest route will come from the boiler cupboard. My thoughts are that fumes could be sucked into the room from the boiler am I correct ?
At the moment I have said i don't think its possible due to the type of boiler fitted in its location but i did not want egg on my face being wrong and also i do like to sleep at night. I'm sure this is correct but wanted to be 100% before i went back hopefully armed with the facts.

I hope I have explained the setup correct but it just was ringing wrong in my head when i see the boiler in there.
Many thanks in advance for your replies.

im sure open flued water heaters are illegal and have been for ages id recomend you get gas safe eng in to look at it it could be an open flued boiler which will still be affected by the fitting of a fan
a picture\ would help

Hi Steve, Yeah sorry about not having a picture. I did think about that as i was typing the question. In saying that I am back tomoz to do some more there so will take some pics so you have all the info. It was the vent in the door and wall that sparked my thinking which is bad really concidering its a council grant job and has been looked at by a surveyor and missed it. Perhaps I'm wrong but thought better to ask here.
cheers

I doubt that it's open flued tbh.
Your probably looking at a room sealed appliance with cooling vents in the cupboard.
As has been said, a piccy will be helpful.
And btw, welcome!

Ive often wondered how many sparks consider the implications of fitting extractor fans in positions that may cause flue problems to open flued appliances. I guess the answers atleast one LOL

Legally a sparks must follow the gas regulations as well as plumbers must follow the electrical regs. I have offten wonder why fan manufactures are not made to included precautions in the installation instructions. I have come across a number of newly fitted fans that effect a flues performance.

well done for asking the question needasparks, we could do with some more details of the appliance or a picture if possible mate.

Well we do read regs sometimes 😉 even if we don't charge as much as you boys, lol
I'm normally good on airflows ect with fans. however, boilers are not my thing and my pet hate having one in a bathroom IP ratings with zones etc which as said threw up the possible problem. would be good if i was wrong for the clients sake.
I know its an old multipoint boiler but thats all and the room sealed/flue sealed side is over my head really.
As said am back tomorrow so will get more info and pics if i can to help answer.
Good to know I can get a definative answer here though guys, cheers for your input.

If you can get the make and model we could help you further,it is probably room sealed(lets hope so)

Well it appears i have not enough posts to get pics up yet so no photo's but its a Main mersey super if that helps.

A Main Mersea Super is a room sealed multipoint water heater and needs no air from the room for combustion,
The compartment vents are solely for cooling the appliance.
In a nutshell, you can fit your fan with no worries. 🙂

Many thanks guys, sorry for delay in answering but i forgot my password to comment 🙁 yes don't say it...................
But thanks again.
