Went to a job a week or so ago, customer complaining of noise coming from upstairs mostly when the downstairs toilet is flushed and some times when the washing machine is used.

checked ball valve on cwst, ball float half full of water and valve knackered. Replaced it thinking this must be the issue. The tank is only feeding the cylinder for what it's worth, all cold outlets are mains.

Sent back today

The noise hasn't occurred while I have been there but the customer has recorded it for me. The noise comes from upstairs in the bathroom, whistling and banging. Another guy had been out today before me and replaced the diaphragm on the downstairs toilet fill valve. Problem still going.

If I turn the cold tap at the basin upstairs on and off you can hear a slight banging, not a cartridge tap.

no cartridges on any taps.

im thinking dodgy stopcock?

can anyone else suggest what to check. I was unable to change the stopcock as the meter doesn't shut off, southern water are coming to fix that before I go back, I have told the customer to get them to check for any issues with the supply.

any ideas?

It could be the mains stopcock. Wonder is the stopcock fully open?

The water meter outside was only partially open when I checked. Fully open problem still occurring.

Internal stopcock fully open also.

Strange what can happen on the water mains.
Stopcock jumper could be loose or washer maybe needs replaced.
Toilet fill valve somewhere could still be the problem. Maybe better ballvalve types changed to Fluidmaster type valves, but you don't want to look a fool if it doesn't cure it
Really difficult I find to solve.
I suppose it is also possible that washer type taps could still be faulty - washer gone, or works loose inside?

Change the whole inlet valve, not the diaphragm, befoe doing anything else. If/when she still complains that the washing machine occasionally bangs (she might not) fit a shock arrestor.

Why did you change ball valve? Was it overflowing? Fair enough if she understood it wanted doing soon and asked for it to be done but doesn't sound like what you were there for.

Ball valve must have been overflowing at some point the float was full of water and the valve was letting by. It was by chance I said I'll check the ball valve while investigating the cause of the noise. I work for a company so see something that isn't right and change it.

Each toilet has decent fill valves, one is a fluid master. This is the downstairs toilet. Will change this next time.

Another thing, the customer has also said the noise occurred around midnight when nothing has been used.

Has the w/c got a dump valve? If so this could be passing slightly, they often do. This could cause the w/c to start filling by itself in the middle of the night.

I had a problem similar to this, made a terrible racket, swapped all the ball valves on toilets and tanks no difference, turned the stop tap off and on for a separate job and problem disappeared and hasn't come back, it's worth a go

maybe a high pressure problem ...pressure will creep up at night as well when demand in the area fall`s explaining the bump in the night be interested to hear if you find the fault....regards Turnpin:8:

It'll be this, it's a stop tap or bv.

Has a meter, meter is in effect a non return valve, you need expansion vessel on cold main. Pressure will also rise as cold water heats up to the temperature of the room that pipe is in
