syphon height

View the thread, titled "syphon height" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

It's the flush settings and how you set them that have a direct effect on the power of the flush. On push button syphons, these have sliders to control the duel flush volumes and on traditional lever operated syphons, these have removable press on buttons to control the volume of water that is flushed.

On certain syphons like the Siamp, the correct height does have an effect on how it performs.

thanks system3 - it's the trad lever operated ones I'm referring too - why do they come in various height's? Is it just to suit various cistern sizes?

Old cisterns gave a 9 litre flush volume and modern cisterns now give a 6 litre flush volume. Syphons are sized to suit both, but Macdee syphons have adjustments to set a 6 litre one to a 9 litre one.

There are moves to further decrease the flush volume in cisterns, but IMO this will only cause problems as many current 6 litre flushes barely cope.

A standard syphon is 9" high, a country pattern (which allowed an internal overflow but were actually illegal to fit at the time) is 8" Depending on how old it is it may also have a removable disk on the side or a bit on the top of the bell that was cut off. These allowed a dual flush of 4 1/" or 9 litre or a shorter flush. If it is a relatively new one it is probably set to 6 litre.
The flush volume however, regardless of the syphon, is determined by the size of the cistern.
