Tesco fixed price rates

View the thread, titled "Tesco fixed price rates" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

If Tesco don't do it, then Asda will, then there's the AA, Homeserve and about a hundred more companies "branching out" into the home improvement market. I don't like Tesco, but it's not just them that are doing it.

So, what can we do about it SYS? Or is complaining about the inequality of life all that there is!

Squeezed from the top by the big boys with loads of money and a global marketing strategy.
Squeezed from the bottom by diy'ers, cheapskates and wannabees.

What to do eh????

if i didn't know better, I'd say it sounds like you're making the case for getting baked in oz mountainman:sifone:

i don't think there's anything that could be done - unless there was some kind of decent union. how many other sectors have the big firms decimated? tonnes. just gotta try to ride it out for as long as you can and hope that the big firms screw up.

How about following the TESCO vans about (or their subbies) and handing in your business card after they have thrown the boiler in? If you cant beat them, wait until its dark then jump them when they're not looking!................................ or just poach their unsatisfied customers... :13:

Wish I could be sunbaked in OZ Benny but unfortunately I'm over 45.
Spent some quality years working hard and being sumbaked in the Mediterranean tho until SWMBO decided that I'd had enough fun and repatriated me to good old blighty cos she missed the grandkids.

Funny thing is that we saw more of them when we lived over 2000 miles away than we do now they are just a few miles away.

typical int-it, similar with my family - my folks live out in spain most of the year - that's about the only time they see my kids. they barely see 'em when they're 15 miles down the road.with my folks, I think when they're over here they're afraid they'll miss countdown or judge judy or something, so they dont go out.

We're becoming that scourge of society, the grumpy old men!

Seen this coming years ago. It virtually wiped many small companies out when the big boys moved in to take Housing Association repair contracts.

That was the demise of out family business. We lost two HA contracts that were our bread and butter despite being promised the previous year that they favoured smaller contractors.

My take on this is pretty positive to be honest. It will be another similar scenario to B&Q bathroom fitters. They are paid fairly poor rates and the only B&Q bathrooms I have seen recently are ones that are being ripped out after a couple of years. In both cases due to terrible shower installations wrecking the rooms with water damage.

The result? An even more than normally expensive bathroom installation due to requirement to replace water-damaged walls, dehumify etc. You can bet those customers will tell all of their friends how good B&Q fitters are.

The same thing will happen with Tesco. British Gas already have a pretty bad reputation. Anyone who relies on other company's fitters to make money either has to pay peanuts (equalling a rubbish job) or charge over the top (good job but uncompetitive).

When their jobs start to fall apart a couple years down the line, you can bet the big companies won't be coming back to fix them.

Morrisons for me. Feckin hate Tesco and Asda too. Like Aldi as well.

What you'll find is that anything that Tesco do, Asda will follow as well. The thought of Smart Price Boilers is bloody scary.

What happened to the prices that this thread started with ? Only 2 given but what for say the combi swap do they expect ?

The thing is Tescos obviously see money in the game. The government said they can't have any more of the grocery market they already have over the 30% they are allowed. So they are looking at alternative places to find cash.
Lets be honest gas fitting and plumbing prices are on the whole usually expensive and a good mark up can be made.
So Tescos smelt an opening and dived in. They also have a brand name that lots of people like and trust. They know they can take things back without any argument. Its economics of scale that allows them to offer low prices. Perhaps they will sell package deals and make cash on supplying the materials and appliances as well as the fitting.

They may have good standards you never know.

Whichever it is the industry looks set for some serious competition.

Thing is, if you find a good gas fitter willing to work for those prices, please let me have their number and I will pass them all my work and charge my usual rates. In return I will kick my feet up at home all day, earning a living off them.

Good gas fitters and plumbers charge a good whack per day because they are good and their customers know they are surely?

Lets be honest how much do BG make for the like of a central heating system subbing it out? A lot of money for very little.

How about £80 a service, Tescos could cut that down in many ways and offer maintenance plans, they have the muscle to do that. And whether the work is good or not people know where Tescos is and they know they are not cowboys, who can never be found if the job goes wrong.

I am not a Tesco support just trying to make clear what the competition is like.

All we can do is keep our prices reasonable and offer a good service.

B&Q has huge stores and everyone knows where they can be found. That said, I've personally seen 2 B&Q fitted bathrooms recently that have gone massively wrong within 4 years costing the customers thousands of pounds to have them replaced. In my experience large companies are much much better than small companies at avoiding paying out for any faulty workmanship etc. I've also had to replace several systems fitted by BG that were completely inappropriate for the house in question. Again, BG didn't want to know from their customer.

I have no faith at all that Tesco will be any different. The business models are the same, that is, unless they are going to employ their own tradesmen.
