Went to a job today to do a service on an Ideal Mexico, went to the meter to do a tightness test to start off. There was lead pipework on the inlet and outlet to the meter and the meter was supported on a single brick, so thought that's AR. But then looking at the pipework, someone had teed off the lead pipework after the meter and at some point the lead pipework branch has been cut off and then just crimped together to create a seal.

I said it was ID as it's not a correct method of capping a gas supply. So I called the ESP as the handle was also missing off the ECV. So when I was completing the paperwork, the gas man came and was questioning why I was disconnecting the supply. So I explained that the gas pipe had just been crimped and he was going on about that it's not ID and where in the "CORGI" book does it state that it's ID because it can't be under gas fittings because there is no cap for a lead pipe.

No idea why he was so concerned about it to be honest. But just wondering if I was in the right by saying it's ID?

just replace the lead work and get provider to support meter and provide ecv handle, your choice not his as its your signature not his and point that out to hom. you do your bit and get them to do theirs

The real issue here is the meter supported on a brick this is what caused the recent explosion in Oldham.

The esp was right. There are no purpose made fittings for lead compo.
You can still connect onto lead but the reason to advise replacement it is because most of those who know how too do it are dying off.

So it's not ID to just crimp the pipe closed? Ye i know the support was crap so got him to fit new regulator and anaconda and bracket the meter so that's all good now. Going back to renew the lead today for him.

I probably wouldn't of even noted it IMO. Worse case NTCS if you wanted to.

if its not leaking then then I don't see any reason to do anything

Crimping pipes, Know it has all been done before in the past, but it isn't correct. You could say the nearest description in the USSP is 5.2 inappropriate fittings, which is deemed as ID and RIDDOR, it all depends on your interpretation of an approved fitting. You could also say its been like it for years and has never caused a problem. At least if you have brought it to the customers notice and scarred them enough, it might get changed.

I had permelli box that was damaged and was told so what if the meter was in a room eg terrace house it would leak gas in the room so whats up with a damaged box - makes me wonder why they make rules

But if you were to cut and crimp a copper pipe these days it would be ID wouldn't it?

Yes it shouldn't be done and is ID. The correct fitting should be used.
As Reg man said it was done as common practice in the past and if it was done correctly there is less chance of anything happening than getting hit with a bus while humping Kylie Minogue.
