got called to customers house today saying he was having problems with lighting fire. problem is he's having to hold in gas control for about 40 seconds for the themocouple to pick up the heat to keep gas valve open. it looks like the flame from the pilot is just touching the very tip of the thermocouple. the pilot unit comes as one, and says only had the unit changed a couple of months ago by another gas fitter. took out the unit checked there was to dirt in injector but nothing, also pressures are to mi. what would you guys do try another unit?

I'd say the pilot flame sounds too small if its "just touching". Get a thermocouple tester and check it

the flame seems fine when i say touching i mean the outlet seems slightly to high and the bottom of the pilot flame is touching the top of the thermocouple. if the thermocoulpe was a touch higher it would be spot on. just wondering if it could be faulty set.

If the T/C is giving in excess of 20mvolts, it'll be the gas valve

never understood the point of thermo couple testers, after all if the thermo couple knackered, pilot wont stay alight so replace thermocouple, whats the point of testing it?
